Reading code has quietly become one of the most expensive problems in software development. Not writing it. Not deploying it. Just understanding what already exists.
This week, Google introduced Code Wiki, a new AI-powered system designed to help developers understand codebases instantly — without digging through outdated documentation or reverse-engineering someone else’s logic.
Google’s message is blunt: documentation shouldn’t be a separate task. It should evolve automatically with the code.

What Google Is Actually Launching
At its core, Code Wiki creates a continuously updated, structured wiki for software repositories. Every time the code changes, the documentation updates with it. No manual rewrites. No stale READMEs.

While the public preview focuses on open repositories, Google is clearly thinking about enterprise teams.
