When I Have So Much Time, I Don’t Know What to Do
Christmas holiday always comes with a strange promise: time.
Suddenly, the calendar is empty. No classes to attend, no deadlines screaming my name, no alarms that force me to wake up earlier than my soul wants to. On paper, this should feel amazing. And sometimes, it does.
But most of the time, I just sit there thinking, okay… now what?
It’s funny. When I’m in college, I complain nonstop about being busy. Assignments pile up, schedules clash, and my brain feels like it’s running too many tabs at once. I daydream about holidays. About rest. About having “me time.”
Then the holiday arrives.
And I freeze.
I have so much time, yet I don’t know how to use it. The hours stretch longer than usual, but instead of feeling free, I feel oddly stuck. I scroll. I overthink. I plan things I never start. I tell myself I should be productive, then feel tired just thinking about being productive.
Ironically, when I’m busy with college, I become more alive. My days are structured. My time feels expensive. Even rest feels earned. I complain, yes but I move. I function. I know what I’m supposed to do next.
During holidays, time is cheap. And cheap things are often wasted. Maybe the problem isn’t having too much time. Maybe it’s that I’ve gotten used to external pressure telling me what to do. Deadlines give direction. Classes give rhythm. Without them, I have to face a harder question: what do I actually want to do?
And that question is uncomfortable. Christmas holiday exposes that gap. Between being busy and being intentional. Between resting and avoiding life. Between freedom and confusion.
I’m slowly learning that it’s okay not to fill every hour with productivity. It’s also okay to admit that doing nothing is harder than it sounds. Rest is a skill. So is choosing what matters when no one is watching.
Maybe this holiday doesn’t need a grand plan. Maybe it’s enough to notice the irony, laugh at it, and let time pass a little more gently.
After all, soon enough, college will come back and I’ll be busy again, complaining about how I have no time, forgetting how strange it felt to have too much.
