My Views on Social Media

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat are the social media giants. Social Media is used for a wide variety of things like interacting with friends and employers looking for employees. When natural disasters happen, the support groups look to social media users for funds and extra hands to help the hurt. Facebook is overrun by family and grandparents looking for extra lives on candy crush. Social Media is the easiest way to hear about the latest news on anything and everything.

To start let us talk about the good things. When people need support from society, most of them go to a website called GoFundMe.com. GoFundMe is a website for people in need of money because they or someone close to them is in need of assistance. It could be the cases of, they do not have the money for a surgery, to go on in life because of terrible recent events, and many other reasons.

The best way for people to get the word out is with the use of social media. For example, Internet-famous Jarome Jarre posted a video on his social media platforms asking the world to look at the African country of Somalia. Somalia, like many other African countries, are in a massive food and water drought. His idea was to fill a Turkish Airline cargo plane with food for Somalians but needed one million dollars. He did just that but with two and a half million dollars towards Somalia.

That was one of the great things about social media but there are some bad things. Multiple people have committed suicide because of actions they or other people did to hurt them. Parents are skeptical when it comes to letting their own kids use social media because of what has happened to other children in the past, though that is not right.

Those kids did not go to family for help, they did not decide to press the off button when it was staring right at them. Kids can very easily turn off their device and never speak of what they saw or did and everything would be fine.

Furthermore, social media is the easiest way to interact with friends. The main social media platform, mainly used by teens but older generations are getting into it, is Instagram. Instagram allows you to share pictures to your followers and DM (direct message) people you want to have a private conversation with and or a group of people.

Whenever someone you follow posts a picture you are able to like the picture and leave a comment. There can be down sides to this also. Someone could post an inappropriate picture of someone you know and it could hurt multiple people.

In conclusion, social media is great for everyone. It helps people be feel a part of something even when they are feeling excluded from society. It can help cure someone in need and it can very well do the exact opposite. It is the easiest way to hear about the latest news and stories from around the world. Social media helped Jarome Jarre feed many Somalians and has helped many others. Social media continues to increase our connection to the world each and every day.
