Leo XIV becomes the first pope from the United States, marking a historic moment for the Church. Prior to his election, he served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a strategic position that gave him deep insight into the global ecclesiastical structure. His journey includes a significant mission in Peru, where he worked as a missionary, parish priest, and educator, in addition to serving as the Superior General of the Order of St. Augustine.

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost is the son of Louis Marius Prevost, of French and Italian descent, and Mildred Martínez, of Spanish origin. His academic background is diverse, with a degree in Mathematics from Villanova University, a master’s in Theology from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, and a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome.

The choice of the name Leo XIV follows a papal tradition that values continuity and reverence for predecessors.
