Turns out, failure speaks fluent french too!
Bonjour, mes amis✨
If you’ve read my last blog, you’d understand how French and I moved from “what is this nonsense?” to “I want to live in a Parisian flat and open my very own small patisserie”
Well well well…this? This is the twist I never expected.
🌚The DELF B1 Disaster
So let’s go back to when I had just cleared DELF A2. I was on cloud nine and i was watching French movies, listening to Stromae tracks and fantasizing about being a bilingual girl. So… next? DELF B1, naturally! Logical no?
Except, twist. of. fate- it also turned out to be the year that saw my Class 12 board examinations. For the uninformed, that’s essentially India’s academic equivalent of the Hunger Games.
But I was sure, Scratch that- I was too sure. I had something to prove. To the whole world. And to myself and I believed I was invincible, handling passé composé and electrochemistry like a pro.
I entered the exam room with theatrics. I’ve got this, I said to myself. Bonjour, B1. Let’s dance.
Spoiler alert: B1 danced all over me(hehe)
When the test results rolled in- my confidence did a mic drop. I hadn’t passed. Not even a whisper close. I blinked at the screen. Reloaded the page. Blinked again. Nope- still failed. Mon Dieu.
I felt. terrible. I began to question everything, Was I ever any good at French?Did I really love this language?Had I been fantasizing about my relationship with it all these years? Was this my cue to quit?
For a fleeting, panic-stricken moment, I even thought about leaving it all behind and moving on. Like, bye conjugations, I’m leaving to code now. (Spoiler once more: I am terrible at coding.)
But then something strange occurred.
💥From breakdown to breakthrough
Somewhere between spirals of self doubt and melodramatic late night journals, I came to a realization that I didn’t love French because I was good at it. I loved it because it lived.
I loved it when I finally grasped a line of a French song I’d heard a million times before. I loved the way my head sparked attempting to construct imperfect tense sentences. I was enamored with the enchantment of speaking my own language in a tongue that once sounded like nonsense.
So… rather than giving up- I did something crazy. I began a French club.
🎊The Creation of L’Atelier Français
I’d always wished I could be a member of a French club during college. But when I discovered that no such club existed and something within me (perhaps the specter of every DELF section that failed) muttered… why not create one?
So I went to one of my professors and just spit it out “I want to form a French club. Please don’t laugh.” But she didn’t. Actually, she adored the idea. She was the first “yes.” And instantly, the dream had legs.
We did our initial meeting in a small room with some chairs, my professor, a foreign assistant professor (feeling so legit), and me with trembling hands and a huge, hopeful heart.
From that moment on, it took off…
- First meeting = cozy mess
- Second meeting = new faces and booming laughter
- Third meeting = boom. We were official. A real club.
And sincerely? It was like magic. The kind of magic that smells like warm vanilla croissants and possibility.
🇫🇷What L’Atelier Français Became
We are a small committee with a big heart. A place where we muddle through pronunciations together, watch French movie, debate energetically whether pain au chocolat is superior to a plain croissant (it is, obviously) and once made a French foriegn exchange students try vada pao. We chat, we laugh, we learn, we fail, we grow. We speak awful French and feel proud of it. Because it’s not about being perfect. It’s about passion.
And strangely enough, that failure that used to make me feel like the world’s worst learner of French?
It gave me this.It gave me community. It gave me purpose. It gave me my club.
🙊Where I Am Now
So no, I didn’t pass DELF B1 on my first try. And yes, I’m still unsure about that oral expression section. But I’m also proud. Proud that I failed and still managed to show up. Proud that I didn’t let one test define an entire journey. And proud that I took my lowest French moment and made it my proudest.
💅🏻French & Me- Now Featuring Growth, Guts & Grammar
If you’re reading this and you’ve failed something too? Good. That means you’re trying. And if you’re dreaming about something but it doesn’t exist yet? Build it.
Even if it starts with a small meeting, three chairs, and shaky hands.Because who knows?
That failed DELF might just be your destiny in disguise.
