There are many things to do and see in Colombia. One of the most anticipated events is the Cartagena Classical Music Festival, which takes place in January. For several days, historical landmarks such as the Adolfo Mejía Theater and the Plaza de San Pedro Claver become concert stages. I’ve sat in the open-air plaza, listening to a string orchestra. And let me tell you—it’s pure magic.

February keeps the momentum going with peak summer weather and the Barranquilla Carnival. As the calendar turns to March, the focus shifts toward Semana Santa (Holy Week), a massive travel period for locals.

The week before or after the holiday rush is the best time to visit Colombia, as the crowds begin to thin and the weather is sunny.

April—May: Rain Showers and Budget Travel

• Weather: The first wet season. Expect regular, heavy afternoon showers and high humidity.
• Vibe: Lush and quiet.
• Best For: Budget travel in Colombia.

This period is often considered the “worst” time to visit Colombia. But it has its pros. Airlines and hotels drop their rates, the tourist crowds vanish, and the countryside explodes in vibrant green.

Yes, there are intense rain showers. But they’re usually brief and arrive in the afternoon or at night, leaving the mornings bright and clear for exploration. (Plus, there’s a romance to having the plazas almost to yourself.)

The real downside is the humidity, which can be uncomfortably thick. I often miss the crisp, dry breeze of January during these months.

June—August: Local Holidays

• Weather: The second dry season. Warm, sunny, and less humid than the earlier months.
• Vibe: Busy with international tourists and vacationing Colombian families.
• Best For: Beach lovers, hikers, and guaranteed outdoor adventure.

This is another peak period for both locals and foreigners. Europeans, North Americans, and Colombians are on summer break. What’s more, the weather is fantastic for hitting the beaches of Tayrona National Park or hiking in the Cocora Valley.

During long Colombian holidays (like summer break), most families go out of town to their relatives, a hotel, or a finca (farmhouse). And by family, this includes uncles, aunts, and cousins. With the number of travelers, accommodations and activities are usually fully booked, and there are unavoidable traffic jams in and out of the city. So, book everything well in advance.

September—November: Coffee Farms and Cozy Cafe Tours

You can head to Salento and join farm tours. Many of them allow you to head into the steep hills to pick the bright red cherries alongside the seasonal workers.

While the interior’s agricultural scene is thriving, the Caribbean coast enters its quietest time of year. The rain can be persistent, but it creates a cozy atmosphere perfect for long lunches and writing postcards in cozy cafes. It’s not ideal for a beach-centric trip, but it’s great for relaxation nonetheless.

December: Festive Spirit and Nightlife

• Weather: Transitioning into the dry season. Showers decrease, and humidity drops.
• Vibe: Unmatched festive energy and extreme crowds.
• Best For: Experiencing the Colombian holiday spirit.

The entire country decks the halls. Cities light up with Christmas decorations, and churches become busy with novenas. It’s the most wonderful, but also the most crowded and expensive time of the year. Flights and hotels sell out months in advance. If you thrive on energy and meticulous planning, your trip can be unforgettable. If you prefer peace, avoid late December.
