Four Epstein Files Conspiracies

Four Epstein Files Conspiracies
And how probable I think they are.
Before going any further, I’ve got to make a confession right up front: I love conspiracy theories. I love digging into them, learning about hidden plans and surprising twists, seeing how they played out in real life. I love debunking the ones that need debunking. and wondering about the ones that seem plausible. (That’s why “The Why Files” is one of my favorite YouTube channels.)
I’m also well aware of the admonition that “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” So just to be clear: for the four scenarios laid out below, I have no evidence. None. All I have is questions — some of which have already been raised by others.
At the end, I’ll give you my opinion as to the possibility of each of these. And as they say, YMMV (your mileage may vary).
Let’s dig in.
Conspiracy Scenario #1 — The Shutdown Was Really About Cleaning the Epstein Files
Basic idea: The shutdown was not about the ACA benefits, or about SNAP or the budget, or even about a power play by Trump and Repubs. Instead, it was to allow time for Pam Bondi and the DOJ staff to “clean” the documents in their possession of any mentions of Trump OR elected Republicans OR important donors.
Why did Speaker Mike Johnson keep the House adjourned for weeks? Because if the House was in session, he would have to swear in newly-elected Adelita Grijalva from Arizona, and she had promised to be the final signature to force the vote in the House on releasing the Epstein files. And Johnson knew that people in the administration were hard at work on the tens of thousands of pages in the documents, and he was told to hold everything at bay while that work was done.
Why, then, did Johnson relent and call the House back into session? And why did Trump refuse to even talk about the Epstein files for weeks, then suddenly give his permission to have them released? Because the editing of the files was finished, or almost finished, and Trump and Johnson knew it. They realized that at some point they were going to have to release the files, and the more cleaned up the files were, the better. They could act like they were being pressured to release them, when in reality they were planning to all along — after all damaging information had been redacted.
Conspiracy Scenario #2 — The Dems Were In On It
Basic idea: Senator Chuck Schumer knew that there were prominent Democrats named in the Epstein files, perhaps including both sitting Dem members of Congress and critical donors to Democrats. So, he demanded restoration of the ACA benefits, knowing that the Repubs and Trump wouldn’t go along, and the shutdown could continue long enough for the Dems to be cleaned from the files as well.
Why, after weeks of insisting that the ACA benefits must be restored in order to open the government, did Schumer give permission for those seven Dems to make a deal with the Repubs to end the shutdown? Why stand firm for weeks, then do what appeared to be a complete cave? Because Schumer got what he really wanted: no surprise revelations about Democrats.
Conspiracy Scenario #3 — The Released Files Will Be a Nothing-Burger
Basic idea: Whatever finally gets released will contain some interesting details and possible connections, but no bad acts tied to big names, and nothing actionable in the courts. After months of build-up, the actual files will be a giant letdown.
The Epstein files that get released will be the document dump of all document dumps. One source reports that there are millions (!) of documents just in the FBI files. Reporters and internet sleuths will spend weeks combing through the files, only to come up with nothing that will be worth the effort. No smoking gun, no evidence tying Trump to young girls, no blackmail.
Conspiracy Scenario #4 — Trump Has an Ace Up His Sleeve
Basic idea: Trump suddenly agreed to allow Repubs to vote to release the files, because he knows there is now no danger.
As long as Trump pushed to keep the files private, almost all Repubs were going to stand with him, even as the heat in the kitchen got hotter and hotter. So why did Trump suddenly do an about-face?
Because he learned of two magic get-out-of-jail-free cards: national security and “ongoing investigations.”
The bill about the Epstein files includes two exceptions to the produce-it-all order:
- Any files that are classified and could harm national security.
- Any files that are part of an ongoing investigation.
Since the president has the ultimate say about classified documents, Trump could easily classify anything that is damaging to him.
And, even though the initial FBI investigation has been over for years, Trump has ordered Pam Bondi to begin a new investigation into Democrats mentioned in the files. Thus, any file that is connected to that new investigation (all of them?) can be held back.
My Take
It’s time, as AJ does at the end of each “Why Files” episode, to ask the basic question: “But is it true?”
As I stated firmly at the top, I have no hard proof of any of this. I just have questions and possible answers. So, how possible is any of this?
#1 — Shutdown was actually to allow time to clean the files. I’d put this one at about 10% or less. For months, Trump assumed that no one could force him or his administration to release the files. That pressure only really ratcheted up after the shutdown had begun — and after Grijalva was elected. It’s certainly possible that once the shutdown began, someone in the Trump administration said “Let’s use this time to clean these files, because it looks like we’re going to have to release them.” But having a plan up front to force a shutdown to do that, AND make Mike Johnson keep the House on vacay for the same reason? Yeah, no.
#2 — It was #1 and Schumer was in on it. This is at 0% with me. There are any number of things I might think or say about Chuck Schumer — but protecting pedophiles, even in his own party, is just not in the cards.
#3 — The released files will be a nothing-burger. This one is at 40%, and could be higher once the first tranche of documents is dropped.
I absolutely believe that Bondi and the DOJ have been doing all they can to get Trump and others out of the files. They will use any loophole they see — or even no loophole at all — to redact, obfuscate, and mislead. After all, who’s going to stop them?
I expect there will be few, if any, smoking guns, and whatever smoking guns are left in the documents will be about Democrats. So as much as I would love to believe that the Epstein files will prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that Trump is guilty of child sexual assault, I’m not holding my breath.
#4 — The get-out-of-jail-free cards. This is at 75%, at least.
You’ve got a DOJ that has been turned into Trump’s personal law firm. You’ve got suck-ups who would be more than willing to go along with classifying any and every document, and you’ve got an Attorney General who ought to be a frog, considering how often she jumps while saying “How high, Mr. President?”
The House and the Senate have both passed the resolution. Trump has indicated he will sign it. And once he does, guess what we all get to do? Wait.
- Wait on the intelligence community to go through all the files, one by one, to see if there is anything there that could compromise national security.
- Wait for DOJ to go through all the files, one by one, to see if the file could possibly relate to the Democrats.
If we actually see any of the Epstein files before the 2026 elections, I will be pleasantly surprised. And if there is actually anything of substance in those files, I’ll be even more pleasantly surprised.
But if the files are released sooner, and if they contain so many smoking guns that they resemble a shooting range, and if the files are so damning that Trump has to resign and the MAGA fever is broken — then I will gladly say “I was wrong” and celebrate along with all of you.
