One of the easiest ways to betray yourself is turning understanding into endless tolerance.
Empathy without boundaries isn’t wisdom — it’s self-abandonment.

Once you’re good at understanding people, you can justify almost anything. “He’s avoidant.” “She’s overwhelmed.” “They had a traumatic childhood.” Suddenly you’re writing a psychological profile instead of setting a boundary. That’s not empathy — that’s rationalization wearing empathy’s clothes.
Empathy is supposed to help you see people clearly, not help you ignore patterns you don’t want to deal with. Yes, their pain explains their behavior. It doesn’t excuse it. You can understand someone deeply and still decide: they suck at relationships, and they don’t get access to my life.
I once stayed in a friendship where the person constantly flaked, criticized, and dumped their emotional chaos on me. I understood every layer — anxious attachment, rough upbringing, fear of abandonment. I kept “holding space.” What actually happened? I became exhausted, resentful, and started doubting my own sanity. The day I finally set a clear boundary and reduced contact, my peace returned almost immediately. Their issues didn’t magically resolve — but they stopped being my problem.
From psychology, this is classic codependency mixed with enmeshment. People with high empathy often fall into “rescuer” roles (see Karpman’s Drama Triangle). You think if you just understand harder or love better, you can heal them. But when someone doesn’t see a problem in themselves, change is nearly impossible. Fixing everyone is not your job.
People will give what they carry. If it’s toxicity or unhealed trauma, that’s what they’ll hand you. Your only real power is deciding who gets close enough to do so.
True emotional intelligence doesn’t excuse hurtful behavior. It lets you see someone’s complexities while protecting what’s yours. Empathy without boundaries isn’t love or wisdom — it’s self-abandonment. At the end of the day, some people need consequences more than they need another understanding ear.
