Why Sikh Governance Matters

This space — Sevadaar-in-Chief — is my attempt to understand and reflect on Sikh governance. I write not as an expert, but as a learner and sevaadar. The Sikh tradition has always viewed leadership as a service, and I hope this blog can be guided by that spirit.

Why I’m Writing

When we hear about Sikh institutions today, such as the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht, it often feels distant, confusing, or wrapped in politics. Information exists mostly in the form of interviews, speeches, and YouTube videos. But clear, written explanations in English or even Punjabi are hard to find.

I realized that by writing, I could do two things:

1. Learn for myself, research, read, and think critically about these topics.
2. Share with others, so that anyone curious about Sikh governance can access simple, structured knowledge.

What I’ll Explore

Over the next series of posts, I’ll be looking at:

• The SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) how it was formed, how it functions, and why it matters.
• The Akal Takht, its role as the highest seat of Sikh temporal authority and the difference between symbol and function today.
• The role of the Jathedaar, and how we should be picking them.
• The Sikh Gurdwara Act, 1925 and how it shaped gurdwara governance in India and what it means for Sikhs today.
• Today’s Relevance: how these structures — built nearly a century ago — impact Sikh identity, politics, and community life today.

Why Governance Matters

Sikh history shows us that governance has never been separate from spirituality. From the Sarbat Khalsa assemblies of the 18th century to the Rehat Maryada codified in the 20th century, Sikhs have wrestled with the same questions: Who speaks for the Panth? How do we decide collectively? How do we stay true to the Guru’s path while adapting to the times?

These questions are as urgent today as ever because it speaks to how Guru Khalsa Panth operates, an often overlooked responsibility that we, the panth, hold as caretakers of the Gurus’ path.
