Why Every New Device Is Another Entry Point for Attackers

As organizations increasingly adopt mobile first strategies, deploying mobile devices across the workforce has become common. However, before rolling out mobile device deployment policies, it’s essential to assess your existing network design, security architecture, and infrastructure. A well planned foundation ensures that performance, scalability, and security are not compromised as mobile usage grows.

Understanding the Impact of More Devices

When every employee brings a personal device or when the organization issues corporate mobile devices the number of connected endpoints can double or even triple. For example, if your company currently supports 500 desktops, adding 500 smartphones and 300 tablets suddenly increases your device count to 1,300.

This surge can strain your network in several ways:

IP Address Management: More devices mean more IP assignments. Without careful subnet planning or the use of DHCP optimization, you could quickly run out of available IP addresses.

Network Segmentation: To ensure security and performance, it’s often wise to isolate personal and corporate traffic using VLANs or separate SSIDs. For instance, creating a “Guest” or “BYOD” network can keep employee owned devices from directly accessing internal systems.

Traffic Prioritization: Business critical apps like video conferencing or cloud ERP systems should take precedence over non essential data traffic. Implementing Quality of Service (QoS) rules can help maintain productivity.

Security and Monitoring Challenges

The more devices connected, the greater the attack surface for potential threats. Every smartphone, tablet, or laptop could become a potential entry point for attackers.

To counter this, organizations must review and possibly upgrade their Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS). These systems will face higher monitoring loads due to the increased number of endpoints generating network events. Additionally, you may need enhanced mobile device management (MDM) or enterprise mobility management (EMM) solutions to enforce security policies, manage updates, and remotely wipe data if a device is lost or compromised.

Example: A financial services firm noticed a spike in network alerts after allowing employees to access email on their personal phones. By implementing a next gen firewall with mobile aware traffic filtering and an MDM platform, they regained visibility and control over the influx of new devices.

Wireless Network Optimization

Most mobile devices rely on wireless connectivity, which places extra pressure on your WiFi infrastructure. If your office WiFi was designed primarily for laptops, the sudden addition of hundreds of mobile devices can lead to:

Congestion and interference in densely populated areas.

Reduced bandwidth per device.

Frequent disconnects or performance drops.

Example: A university that introduced a bring your own device (BYOD) policy saw WiFi slowdowns during peak class times. The IT team upgraded access points to WiFi 6 and implemented dynamic channel management, significantly improving connectivity and user experience.

Budgeting for Infrastructure Upgrades

Finally, remember that your mobile device deployment policy may trigger additional infrastructure costs. These can include:

Upgrading wireless access points or adding new ones.

Increasing internet bandwidth capacity.

Expanding IP address pools or implementing IPv6.

Scaling up security monitoring tools and servers.

Planning ahead helps avoid unexpected expenses and ensures a smoother deployment process.
