Scientists Found 10,000 Unknown Life Forms Inside the Human Body, In Data They Already Had
In January 2024, researchers at Stanford announced a discovery that highlights how much of biology remains unexplored.
While analyzing existing human microbiome data, they identified thousands of previously unknown biological entities made of circular RNA. The entities were found in the human gut and oral microbiome, appearing in roughly half of the people studied.
They called them Obelisks.
What makes Obelisks remarkable is that they don’t fit neatly into any known category. They’re not bacteria. They’re not fungi. They’re not conventional viruses. Researchers have identified approximately 10,000 distinct types so far, suggesting an entirely new layer of biology hiding within the human body.
What do they do? Nobody knows yet.
Scientists still don’t understand their role, whether they influence human health, how long they’ve existed, or why they remained undiscovered for so long.
The answer to that last question is perhaps the most interesting part of the story.

The Obelisks weren’t discovered in newly collected samples. They were found in data that already existed. The microbiome samples had been gathered, processed, and analyzed by researchers over many years. The information was sitting there the entire time.
Nobody noticed because nobody knew what they were looking for.
It’s a reminder that scientific progress isn’t always about collecting more data. Sometimes it’s about asking better questions of the data we already have.
For decades, these entities existed inside millions of people without a name, a category, or even an acknowledgement of their existence.
Then someone looked at the same information differently. And suddenly, biology became larger than we thought.
The human body still contains mysteries. We just found 10,000 of them.
