Bulacan State University CAL student film documentary “Padaluyin” finalist at 37th Gawad Alternatibo

Bulacan State University (BulSU) “Padaluyin” has been named one of the top 12 finalists in the documentary category for the 37th Gawad Alternatibo. The finalists were announced on Thursday, September 4, 2023.

The Gawad Alternatibo has everyone know is recognize as Asia’s longest-running independent film competition, and gained a reputation for recognizing, promoting and showcasing independent filmmaking in the region, providing a platform for emerging filmmakers to present their work to a broader audience innovative storytelling and diverse perspectives in cinema.

Jhezarie Santiago, a senior broadcasting student and the director of “Padaluyin” expressed her excitement upon hearing the news. In an interview, she shared her initial thoughts:

“It was always my dream to reach this level, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up, knowing how competitive the Gawad Alternatibo is. Kaya grabe nalang yung gulat at tuwa nung maka-receive ng email from them confirming our selection.”

Reflecting on her journey, she mentioned in a recent post:

“This might be the last film competition na masasalihan ko sa loob ng university, pero talaga namang nag-iwan ng great memories.”

“Grabeng bungad talaga ng ber months sakin hahaha sana tuloy-tuloy na.” she added.

In addition to its nomination at the Gawad Alternatibo, Santiago’s accomplishments have been acknowledged at other competitions as well. Notably, two of the finalist films she directed received awards at DALUMAT 2025: “Deja Vu” — Best Picture Award and “Padaluyin” — 3rd Best Picture Award. These awards further highlight her talent and dedication to her craft.

The documentary tacles the story of Joel San Jose, a member of the Dumagat indigenous community from Sitio Iyak in Angat Dam.

Additionally it explores the rich cultural heritage of the Dumagat people located in the Sierra Madre mountain range and specifically around the Angat Dam in Norzagaray Bulacan , their traditions, and their struggles in a rapidly changing world. Through intimate interviews and captivating visuals, it sheds light on the challenges faced by indigenous communities in the Philippines.

The nomination of “Padaluyin” also signifies BulSU’s return to the CCP stage, following the success of Mark Daniel De Castro’s documentary, “Sariling Gunita,” in 2023. This ongoing recognition underscores the university’s commitment to nurturing talent in the arts and amplifying important social issues through film.

With documentaries like “Padaluyin” the voices of marginalized communities are amplified, fostering a greater understanding of the rich Filipino culture.

The highly anticipated film “Padaluyin” is set to be showcased alongside other finalist films at the prestigious Red Carpet Cinemas, located in Shangri-La Plaza. This exciting event will take place over a week, from October 4 to October 10.
