The Day I Went to the Movies All Alone
What happens when you finally take that leap into doing things alone

It started with a social media post — one of those inspirational pieces about becoming the kind of person who can have lunch alone, catch a movie solo, or travel by themselves. The whole “independent adult” manifesto. As I scrolled past it, something clicked. A simple question echoed in my mind: Can I actually do this?
Not just the idea of it, but really do it. What would it feel like to sit in a restaurant by myself? To buy a single movie ticket? To own that space without needing someone else to validate the experience?
The lunch experiment went surprisingly well. I found this good restaurant, ordered what I actually wanted (not what I thought would be easy to share), and had what I can only describe as a damn good meal. No awkward silences to fill, no compromising on choices. Just me and some excellent food.
The small solo trip that followed was equally successful. I was starting to feel like maybe I had this whole independence thing figured out.
But then came the real test: the movie theater.
I was excited as hell about this part. Without getting into specifics about which film or exactly when this happened, let’s just say I decided to go all out. First day, first show — the full experience. My mind was racing with possibilities. This was supposedly one of the most anticipated movies worldwide. Surely the theater would be buzzing with energy, filled with fellow film enthusiasts.
I had this ridiculous notion that completing this “challenge” would somehow prove my maturity. Looking back now, five or six years later, I realize how foolish that was — as if sitting in a theater alone could serve as some kind of adulting certificate.
But here’s what actually happened.
Despite being the most-awaited movie that everyone was supposedly dying to see, the theater was practically empty. Maybe ten people scattered across the entire hall. I sat there thinking, “What the hell is happening right now?”
The irony wasn’t lost on me. When you decide to do something completely on your own, you might just end up… well, completely alone.
But as I settled into my seat, watching the previews play to a nearly empty theater, something shifted. This wasn’t the experience I’d imagined, but it was my experience. I had made the choice to be there. I had taken the steps, even when the path looked different than expected.
The movie played out in that quiet theater, and I realized something important: when you choose your own path, you’re the one who gets to decide what steps to take in life. Even if many people don’t take that same route, if you do, it might work out. Or it might not. The outcome isn’t always the point.
At least you tried.
There’s something to be said for that — for showing up, even when the theater is empty, even when the experience doesn’t match the expectation. Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen not when everything goes according to plan, but when you discover you’re okay with whatever unfolds.
That day taught me that independence isn’t about proving anything to anyone. It’s about being comfortable with your own company, your own choices, and your own version of how things should go. Whether the theater is packed or empty, whether the meal is perfect or just okay, whether the trip goes smoothly or hits every possible snag — you’re still there, still experiencing it, still learning something about who you are when no one else is watching.
And maybe that’s worth the price of admission.
But here’s what I truly believe: God is always with you. Whatever path you choose, whatever challenge you face, God will help you through it. Maybe not in the exact way you want or expect, but in the way that’s right for you. And eventually, you’ll realize it — sometimes in that empty theater, sometimes years later when you’re telling the story.
So go ahead, take that solo trip, eat that meal alone, buy that single movie ticket. Your story is waiting to be written.
I’d love to hear yours — drop a comment and share your own solo adventure moments. What did you discover about yourself when it was just you?
