The Palauan creation myth centers on the goddess Chuab, whose body gave rise to the islands of Palau. This myth is one of the most well-known traditional stories in Palauan oral history and reflects the deep connection between the people, their land, and the divine.

In the beginning, there was no land — only the vast ocean stretching in every direction. Floating upon its surface was a giant woman named Chuab. She was not born, nor made; she simply was. Her body was immense, her limbs stretching across the horizon, her breath stirring the waves.

Chuab drifted in the sea for ages, her body becoming heavy with time. Eventually, she grew tired and lay still. As she rested, her body began to change. Her back arched above the water, forming the first ridges of land. Her arms curled into bays, her fingers into reefs. Her hair spread across the sea like seaweed, and her breath became the wind.

From her body, the *islands of Palau were formed — each one a part of her, shaped by her rest. The largest island, Babeldaob, is said to be her torso, while the smaller islands are her limbs and features. The people of Palau believe they are descended from her essence, born from the land she became.

Chuab’s transformation was not a death, but a gift. Her spirit remained in the land, in the trees, in the tides. She became the mother of the islands, and her presence is still felt in the rocks and roots of Palau. The myth teaches that the land is not just a place to live — it is a living ancestor, deserving of respect and care.
