The Maths Behind Roulette
I recently finished reading Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s The Gambler. If you haven’t read it, picture this: Alexei Ivanovich, the protagonist (and a “bit” of a tragic figure), is frantically running around the casino of “Roulettenburg,” sweating, stressing, and putting his entire fate on the spin of a wheel. It’s chaotic. It’s stressful. It’s a masterclass in how not to manage your money.
Reading Alexei’s spiraling obsession got me thinking. We all have that tiny voice in our heads when we see a roulette wheel: “I have a feeling about Black 17.” And after my previous article The Maths behind theParthenon and my other articles about maths (see The Calculus Contrversy) I decided to do The Maths Behind Roulette.
But here is the cold, hard truth i found out through my research:
The wheel doesn’t care about your feelings or instinct. It doesn’t care about Alexei’s debts, and it certainly doesn’t care about my rent money. The wheel only cares about one thing: Math!
Let’s take a 5-minute break from reality to look under the hood of the casino’s most famous game. We’ll skip the complex calculus and stick to the stuff that actually matters next time you find yourself near a felt table.

A Brief History of the Spin
Before we get to the numbers, we have to blame someone for this invention. That someone is mostly Blaise Pascal, a 17th-century French math genius. The funny thing? He wasn’t trying to build a casino game. He was trying to invent a perpetual motion machine.
He failed at the physics (spoiler alert!: perpetual motion is impossible), but he accidentally created the roulette wheel.
Fast forward a bit to the Blanc brothers in 1843. To attract customers to their casino, they did something sneaky: they added a Zero to the wheel. Legend has it Francois Blanc made a deal with the devil to learn the secrets of the game because if you add up all the numbers on the roulette wheel (1 to 36), the sum is 666!
Spooky? Maybe. Profitable for the casino? Absolutely.
The Math (It’s Not 50/50)

Here is the biggest lie your brain tells you in a casino: “If I bet on Red, I have a 50% chance of winning because it’s either Red or Black.”
If you look closely at a standard European Wheel, you will see numbers 1 through 36. Half are red, half are black.
- Red numbers: 18
- Black numbers: 18
If that were it, the casino would break even, and they wouldn’t have those nice chandeliers. Enter the Green Zero.
That one green pocket changes everything.
- Total pockets: 37 (Numbers 1 through 36, plus 0).
- Winning pockets for Red: 18.
- Losing pockets (Black + Zero): 19.
So, the math for winning a bet on Red looks like this: 18 divided by 37. That equals about 48.6%. Meanwhile, the casino wins if it hits Black OR Zero, which gives them a 51.4% chance of winning.
Do you see that? The game is rigged just slightly in their favor. That tiny gap between your 48.6% win rate and the casino’s 51.4% win rate is where the casino makes its billions. This mathematical advantage is called the House Edge.
In European roulette, the house edge is exactly 2.7% (which is 1 pocket out of 37). This means for every $100 you bet, mathematically, you are destined to lose $2.70 over the long run.
The American Trap
If you are playing in Las Vegas, it usually gets worse. American casinos added also a Double Zero (00). Now there are 38 pockets.
Your chance of winning a Red bet drops to 18 divided by 38, which is roughly 47.4%.
The house edge nearly doubles to 5.26%. So, if you see a wheel with a “00” on it, run away. You are paying a tax on your ignorance.
Can You Beat the Math?
Since the days of Dostoyevsky’s Alexei, players have tried to outsmart the wheel. Let’s look at the most popular game styles.
1. The Martingale Strategy (The “Double Up”) This is the most famous (and “logical”) strategy in the world.
- The Logic: You bet $10 on Red. If you lose, you bet $20. If you lose again, you bet $40. Eventually, Red has to hit, right? And when it does, you cover all your losses and win your original $10 back.
- The Reality: It works… until it doesn’t. The math of exponential growth is terrifying. If you double your bet after every loss, the sequence looks like this: 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320, 640, 1280!
Now, your brain will tell you, “There is no way Black hits eight times in a row. Red is due!” This is called the Gambler’s Fallacy. The wheel has no memory. Every single spin has that exact same 51.4% chance of ruining your day.
Let’s look at the cold, hard numbers on a European wheel. What are the actual mathematical odds of going on a terrible losing streak where Red just refuses to show up?
- Losing 3 times in a row: About 13.5% (happens roughly 1 in every 7 attempts).
- Losing 5 times in a row: About 3.5% (happens roughly 1 in every 28 attempts).
- Losing 8 times in a row: About 0.48% (happens roughly 1 in every 207 attempts).
One in 207 doesn’t sound so bad, right? Until you realize that a busy roulette table spins about 40 to 50 times an hour. If you play for a few hours, or visit the casino a couple of times a year, you are practically guaranteed to hit that devastating 8-loss streak eventually. And when you hit that 8-loss streak, you have already lost a total of $2,550. To keep the strategy alive on the 9th spin, you now have to place a bet of $2,560 all to win a measly $10 profit.
And here is the final nail in the coffin that is super important: most tables have a “Maximum Bet” limit (often $500 or $1,000) specifically designed to stop this strategy. Once you hit the table limit, you physically cannot double your bet anymore. Your system breaks, and the casino keeps your thousands.
2. The James Bond Strategy This involves covering more than half the table with bets to spread your risk.
- $14 on High numbers (19–36)
- $5 on the 6-number line (13–18)
- $1 on Zero (for insurance)
The Reality: You cover roughly 67% of the outcomes. You will feel like a winner most of the time. But when the ball lands on numbers 1–12, you lose a big time. Over time, that negative mathematical expectation will still eat your bankroll. Bond might save the world, but he can’t save his wallet from statistics.
The Conclusion: What is the Best Game Style?
After analyzing the probabilities and the failed strategies of desperate literary characters, we arrive at the “Best” way to play.
If you are looking for a magical mathematical formula to guarantee profit, stop looking. It doesn’t exist. The game is designed, mathematically, to drain your money slowly.
However, if you want to play, here is the scientifically “best” style:
- Find a European Table: Look for the single zero. It cuts your losses in half compared to the American wheel.
- The “En Prison” Rule: Some French tables have a rule where if the ball hits Zero, your bet isn’t lost immediately; it stays “in prison” for the next spin. This lowers the house edge to a tiny 1.35%. This is the best odds you will ever get in Roulette.
- The “Hit and Run”: The longer you play, the more the math takes over. The Law of Large Numbers dictates that the more spins you play, the closer you get to that 2.7% loss. The best strategy? Bet big once (or a few times), and if you win, leave immediately.
Dostoyevsky’s Alexei couldn’t walk away. That was his tragedy. The math of roulette is beautiful, symmetrical, and cruel. Respect it, have fun, but remember: the only way to truly win is to be the one owning the casino.
