I never responded to one of those challenges. The first time I was invited, I was not listed as a writer, but I am now… so here is my take on **Lynn L. Alexander**’s challenge.

1. Do you prefer an elevator or an escalator?

I usually take the escalator in the hope of exploring something new. That never happens in an elevator. If I need to go the same way often, I still prefer the escalator. I hate waiting in a queue for an elevator.

2. What is your favorite cracker?

I hardly ever eat crackers, but when I do, it’s all about the cheese. I once found a small round one in China that’s a strange mix of salt and sugar — I can eat it like candy — but I’ve never seen them outside China.

I guess I’m more of a cake person. Crackers are just the dry cousins who show up uninvited when the cake is gone.

3. What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?

For years, I’ve been working extra hard on those days. I’ve been travelling for seven years now, and it seems I’m always a little behind on work because I’m busy exploring the places I visit. So a rainy day is an indoor day — getting work or laundry done.

Before all this travel, I loved making a cake or some buns, and we’d spend the afternoon cozied up on the couch.

4. If you could turn back the clock to when you were a child, would you want to go back to that time?

No. I had a very nice childhood in a very normal family. I had friends on the street to play with and a school not far away. But as nice as it all was, that belongs to that time. I don’t believe in reliving the past; I’d much rather focus on the present and get the most out of it.

Some of the emotions I remember, I sometimes use in my stories here on Medium. I guess that is a kind of going back.

5. Do you have a green thumb? Can you keep plants alive?

I used to have many plants in our apartment, and they would usually live for years. Guess that makes it a yes, but it’s been many years now since I’ve had a place that was mine for a longer period. Later this year, we’ll return to having a base again, so maybe I’ll do that again.

I once had a garden and a nice area where I could plant all kinds of vegetables. I ended up planting grass in most of the garden, kept a wall of the house for roses, and a small square for flowers my wife loves. Even my neighbours made jokes about my late work and lack of creativity.

6. Would you rather travel by ship or plane?

I’ll take the plane. I love trains too. I dislike ships for any travel that is more than an hour. To be honest, I don’t really like travelling — it is just a waste of time — but I do love to explore new places, so I have to travel to get there. If there are good trains, I will always use them. In Japan and China, they are my preferred way of travelling. I’ve rented cars in many places around the world. Trains and cars give you the possibility to explore while travelling.

7. If you could snap your fingers and fix pain in your body, would you want a new neck, back, or knees? Something else?

Can I get a full-body exchange? Past 60, the pain seems to have developed a sense of humour — it just moves around to whichever body part I’m currently using. I do okay and don’t have any major issues as far as I know.

8. If you could be in a movie or TV show, which movie or show would you want to be in?

I would have loved to act next to Meg Ryan. I have a soft spot for her. A more present one: I would love to be in a movie with Charlotte Gainsbourg. One of the most talented actors in the world, and since I am Danish, it would be unique to play with Mads Mikkelsen or Trine Dyrholm.

I’m not really interested in fame or becoming recognised. I would turn down any invitation to appear in any reality show. I have not watched any TV for years. Shows, plays, and movies are something I have lost touch with.

9. Which appliance or household item would you want to be?

A small, handy suitcase — preferably green. Tough job, gets thrown around a lot, but at least it sees the world. Unlike the toaster, which has only ever seen the same four walls and occasional burnt bread.

10. If you could program one night’s dream, what would it be?

I do program them every night. Have good experiences every day, explore the world, people, or something special, and your dreams will process it. It is highly recommended. Do not turn on your TV or watch something on your smartphone — be present, be alive, and be active.
