Lancia Thesis: Aristocratic Sedan Whose Extravagant Design the Conservative Market Rejected

An attempt to revive Italian luxury that was undermined by traditional shortcomings and the brand’s tarnished reputation.

At the dawn of the new millennium, the traditional Italian brand Lancia faced a crisis as it transitioned from a motorsport legend to the conglomerate’s luxury branch, following a decision by parent company Fiat. It was significantly losing sales in the European market and had to carry its premium image into the emerging MPV segment. Since the mid-1990s, the brand was represented in the mid-size luxury segment by the sedate Kappa model, which failed to counter German competition with its conservative approach.

Thus, the successor took a different approach, aiming to directly link back to a glorious past through aristocratic styling. It was supposed to be the embodiment of an old-world luxury philosophy where sporty lines gave way to classic elegance. Simultaneously, this model was intended to showcase the Fiat conglomerate’s capabilities in the field of state-of-the-art technologies. The result of this effort in 2001 was the unique Lancia Thesis large sedan with classic shapes, intended to represent Italy and its highest officials.

Performance & Driving

Power was sent to the front wheels by a range of inline-fives, complemented by Alfa Romeo’s renowned Busso V-6, all known for their refinement. The engines had to cope with the car’s very high weight, but the Thesis had no sporting ambitions, and the performance was more than sufficient for effortless highway cruising. Slower automatic transmissions also suited this character. Diesel engines with ample torque were also a good choice, though their noise could disturb the peace inside.

Because comfort was the vehicle’s priority, driving characteristics were somewhat compromised. Front-wheel drive and heavy engines up front were among the reasons for early understeer and lower grip at the limit. Although the chassis soaked up bumps exceptionally well, it couldn’t completely eliminate body roll in corners. Over-assisted steering lacked any feedback but was suitable for relaxed driving and simplified parking.

Through its luxury, the car was meant to isolate occupants from the outside world. The Skyhook adaptive damping system, constantly adapting to the road surface, played a key role in this on higher trim levels. It perfectly filtered out larger or smaller bumps, delivering only a subtle floating sensation. Interior comfort also relied on substantial sound insulation, which, thanks to a large amount of sound-deadening material and acoustic glass, kept unwanted noise out.

Exterior & Styling

Exterior design differed significantly from contemporary automobile production. It completely avoided modern sharp edges, offering instead baroque to aristocratic shapes evoking a bygone era, thereby distancing itself from the German competition. A richly chromed grille dominated the front end, protruding from the body line along with the rounded hood.

Teardrop-shaped bi-xenon headlights were recessed into sculpted fenders inspired by classic Lancias. A front bumper with integrated pop-out headlight washers subtly evoked a protruding chrome bumper.

From the profile, long body overhangs and elegant arched shapes, unbroken by a single crease, stood out. A wider C-pillar provided more privacy for rear-seat passengers, while the roofline sloped elegantly in the style of historic sedans. Rich chrome trim was not missing, led by door handles and unique wheel designs in a classic style that simultaneously allowed for effective brake cooling. A sunroof with an integrated solar panel could power the ventilation system while the car was parked for a surcharge.

The rear of the car was heavily rounded and contained no superfluous elements. Vertically oriented LED strips following the fender shapes formed the taillights. The license plate was placed in a prominent chrome frame that also incorporated the reverse light. Not even an exhaust tip interrupted the minimalist rear bumper.

Interior & Equipment

The cabin was a showcase of Italian craftsmanship. It combined elegant shapes with the finest leather and solid metal trim, while minimizing the use of plastic. Symmetrically shaped and elegantly curved, the dashboard flowed directly into the door panels. A horizontal design band supplemented by wood trim intersected it in the middle, incorporating the ventilation vents and continuing onto the doors. The center stack did not match the luxury atmosphere inside; although it featured a high-quality infotainment screen, it was primarily plastic with disorganized controls.

An instrument cluster with classic round gauges in a historic style and chrome bezels sat behind a minimalist steering wheel with a thicker leather rim and four spokes. Seats were more like armchairs, upholstered in high-quality leather with quilted centers and offering broad power adjustment in the front. Headrests included a button like on an old luxury armchair.

The center console consisted of a wood-inlaid shifter area followed by an armrest. A car phone could be stored inside, while ventilation vents and climate controls for rear passengers were located in the back.

A comfortable leather bench sat in the rear, where switches on the folding armrest allowed control of the audio system. A retractable rear window sunshade mimicking the window’s shape aided the feeling of privacy. A wide center tunnel in the rear made the car primarily a four-seater. Generous standard equipment could include an exclusive Bose audio system or an early version of adaptive cruise control. An electronic parking brake was also a new feature. The trunk held plenty of space for luggage for long journeys.

Variants & Derivatives

The Centenario anniversary edition, celebrating 100 years of the famous brand, stood out with two-tone paint or specific wheel designs in addition to full equipment. An armored variant with B6-level ballistic protection was created for the safe transport of the Italian president and top Vatican officials. Coachbuilder Stola even introduced an extended wheelbase version whose rear transformed into a luxury lounge, but it remained only a prototype.

Market Reception & Verdict

Unfortunately, the initial amazement or shock from the unique design was followed by a massive lack of customer interest. For conservative buyers in this segment, the Thesis was too extravagant and drew unwanted attention. Yet it was certainly not a failed car.

It offered unique comfort thanks to adaptive damping and a bump-soaking suspension. Sound insulation was also at a first-class level. To this, one had to add a cabin full of leather and other highly high-quality materials. Engines were sufficiently refined for comfortable long-distance travel, but high weight limited dynamics.

Regrettably, electrical gremlins-common to many Italian cars of the era- soon began to appear, amplified by the complexity of the Thesis model. Problems also affected the chassis with the Skyhook system and the automatic transmissions. More pronounced body roll in corners and early-onset understeer were the penalty for the comfortable ride. Interior ergonomics and controls were also not ideally laid out.

By 2009, over eight years in production, a mere 16,000 units were built, falling significantly behind competitors who achieved similar sales in a matter of months. To make matters worse, the automaker lost money on every car.

Successors & Legacy

Today, the Lancia Thesis is considered a collector’s rarity, demonstrating how important first impressions are in the automotive industry. Even a highly accomplished car cannot repel the largest customer segment with its appearance. The notorious unreliability, difficult to ignore in a segment dominated by German automakers, did not help either. Still, the Thesis remains one of the last full-fledged Italian flagships.

Following this failure, which also meant a massive financial loss, Lancia never again attempted to develop its own mid-size luxury model. The conglomerate itself resorted to significant cuts and effectively ended in-house development at this legendary Italian brand. Instead, primarily rebadged Chrysler models-originally intended for the American market and thus unsuccessful in Europe-began to be sold under the Lancia brand.

In addition to the Voyager large family MPV, a new generation of the Thema model saw the light of day, serving as only a lightly restyled version of the Chrysler 300. Although it succeeded the Thesis in the mid-size luxury segment, they were entirely different cars. Instead of Italian elegance, it was an American-style luxury sedan with muscle-car influences, albeit without a V-8 under the hood for Europe.

Currently, plans exist within the Stellantis conglomerate to revive the Lancia brand, and a new generation of the Ypsilon model was introduced after a long time, but the brand is unlikely to ever enjoy the same level of independence again.

Would the Lancia Thesis have succeeded with more conservative styling, or is even an accomplished automobile not enough for success in this conservative segment?
