Where Are You on the Spectrum of Life? The Seven States of Impactful Living
I’ve always been captivated by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs — that beautiful map showing how we grow from survival to self-actualization. But when our lives are so intertwined with each other, one person’s state of being ripples through an entire community, How do we stand in relation to each other? This article is an attempt to categorize our different states of living within the interconnected web of society.
Awareness is the preliminary step to any grand change. By seeing this landscape clearly, we can move toward a brighter society where we don’t just put all our efforts into surviving, but understand our responsibility to each other — to thrive and uplift one another as a community
The Seven States of Impactful Living:

Spectrum of Impactful Living
1. The Drowning
These are our brothers and sisters who are drowning in life due to poverty, sickness, broken spirits, depression, and fear that paralyzes. They’re not trying to thrive — they’re trying to survive another day. The cycle feels unbreakable, and hope feels distant.
What they need: Not pity but the practical help of entire human community to uplift their lives.
2. The Survivors
Those who know the harsh reality of life firsthand and fight every day just to have a nearly normal life. They are the most resilient among us, carrying burdens that would break others, yet navigating life like ducks on water — calm on the surface while paddling furiously underneath. They’re running the race, but the world moves so fast it cannot stop to accommodate them. They don’t want to give up. They are survivors. But the game is hard.
People with physical disabilities, financial instability, psychological challenges, or too much responsibility to bear often find themselves in survival mode — barely managing but still moving forward.
What they need: Compassion. Because their struggles are often invisible, we must tread gently in the hearts of others — you never know who is barely holding on.
3. The Distracted
Those distracted by junk food and circus, busily chasing virtual happiness. They live inside bubbles built by smartphones and social media, surrounded by shallow friendships and romanticized ideas far removed from reality. They aren’t unconcerned with life — they’re overwhelmed by it. Much of the younger generation risks falling into this category. Not because they’re foolish, but because it’s easier to numb out than to confront the overwhelming complexity of isolated modern lives.
What they need: Awareness and strong mentors who can gently guide them back to reality
4. The Swimmers
Those in relatively comfortable positions, with goals and plans, working tirelessly toward a better future. They’re putting in their absolute best, hitting milestone after milestone, improvising and adapting daily. They follow the path society laid out without questioning. Yet deep down, they wonder about life’s purpose — or perhaps they never get the time to think about what their life will mean in the long run. For there is no time to think, lest they lag behind in the social race.
What they need: A breakthrough perspective to live a fulfilled life. Permission to pause and ask, “Is this all there is?”
5. The Breakthrough Makers
The ones who float above their struggles and break through from the ordinary to make a loud impact in their sphere of influence. The ones who build something with their meager strength to change the direction of society positively. The ones who realize their purpose.
The impact may not be global — it can be in just a handful of lives. But that handful of lives will have a lasting impact exponentially, like seeds expelled by the wind. Breakthroughs can range from creating a new job opportunity to help hundreds of people, to simple encouragements that make people hold onto their hopes. They are the people who make lives better. Sad or happy, they do their best in creating a positive impact on the lives they touch.
This is where we should all aspire to reach. Not wealth or fame, but this — the satisfaction of knowing your presence matters, that you’re changing directions, even if just in your corner of the world. And whenever you come across these breakthrough makers, appreciate them like treasures, for they might not always be pouring from a full cup.
What they need: Deserving acknowledgment and encouragement to sustain them in this vital work.
6. The Decision Makers
Leaders, CEOs, managers — those with the power to shape how thousands of people live. They carry tremendous responsibility for the welfare of those in their care. When they lead with wisdom and compassion, entire communities flourish. What we need from them: Leadership that remembers the drowning and the survivors. Decisions made with humanity, not just profit.
7. The Hidden Architects
The invisible power holders whose influence shapes systems beyond public view. They exist at the apex — distant, powerful, and largely unknowable. We acknowledge them to complete the picture, though their world is far removed from most of ours.
So here’s my question to you: Where are you on this journey? Are you distracted, scrolling through life without really seeing it? Are you surviving, fighting so hard just to make it through? Are you swimming — doing everything “right” but feeling like something’s missing? Are you drowning and need help to reach the surface?
My deepest wish for you is this:
That you move toward becoming a Breakthrough Maker. That you discover your unique purpose — the specific way only you can contribute to healing this world. You don’t need to be a CEO or a famous inventor. You just need to find that thing that makes you come alive, and that makes life better for someone else.
Because here’s the truth: The humanity needs you.
We need you to wake up, to find your purpose, to break through. Not just for yourself, but because there are people who are drowning and surviving who need what only you can give. Your breakthrough will help create pathways for others to follow.
So let’s begin. Not tomorrow, not when you’re ready, not when you have it all figured out. Today. Right now. Start where you are. Uplift others through small acts of kindness and courage.
This is how we heal the world — not through grand gestures, but through a million small breakthroughs, one person reaching back to pull another forward.
Let’s move together. Let’s rise together. Let’s build the world we know is possible.
