People Won’t Trust 23andMe Until It’s on the Blockchain

I recently went on a date with a woman, and at some point the topic of ethnicity came up. I consider myself a xenophile, so I asked her about her ancestry. She wasn’t entirely sure but had a vague sense that her roots were somewhere in Western Europe. I casually asked why she’d never done 23andMe, and she suddenly snapped, “Are you insane? I don’t trust those people with my data”.
Ah the word trust — a magical word that carries so much inside it. Intimacy, vulnerability, stewardship, and everything in between. Even though she couldn’t fully articulate it, that woman was implicitly aware of the risks of future misuse. What she reacted to wasn’t the idea of 23andMe, but the possibility of insurance discrimination, health prediction markets, employer screening, genomic profiling, law enforcement subpoeanas, and biotech companies training models on her DNA. The speed and force of her response had nothing to do with an ancestry test. It was about control, fear, autonomy, and trust.
When trust is the central issue, there’s only one real technological remedy: Blockchain. This is why its first major use case emerged in money. Currency, by its very nature, carries an inherent trust problem. Blockchain was the first system to prevent double spending, making it possible for money to exist without banks or governments serving as intermediaries. But its utility goes far beyond fraud-proof finance — blockchain can also serve as the trust layer for genomics.
At the end of the day, a blockchain is a ledger of truth. So what kind of truth must be guaranteed to make people safe sharing something as sensitive as their genetic data? The answer is simple: access permissions. In other words, the user needs absolute, non-negotiable control over who can view or use their genomic information. Companies like 23andMe can still function as the genetic cloud, but the authority over access — the power to grant, revoke, or audit permissions must be anchored to the blockchain. In other words, 23andMe is the genomic vault and blockchain is the access guard.
Once you accept that the missing layer in genomic privacy is access control, the next question becomes obvious: which blockchain is capable of reliably anchoring something this sensitive? Not every blockchain qualifies. In fact most fail immediately because they have foundations and committees. You cannot anchor human DNA to a system that can be reorganized at the top. This is where Kaspa stands apart.
Kaspa is the only major blockchain that has high throughput Proof-of-Work but no foundation controlling it. Genomics doesn’t require storing DNA itself on chain, that’s terabytes. Genomic data also cannot be stored on any public ledger. What it needs from the blockchain is permission grants and revocations, audit trails, cryptographic access proofs, and timestamped genomic model states. Kaspa can do all those and is in fact ideal for this kind of continuous event stamping. In other words, 23andMe can remain the storage layer, but Kaspa becomes the trust layer. Before a system like this can exist, a few precursor technologies need to mature. The most important is a widely adopted, trusted digital identity layer — something the public uses as naturally as a passport. This blockchain based ID would be the anchor that 23andMe connects each user’s genomic data to. In fact, CityXcape’s StreetPass could evolve into exactly that kind of identity layer.
Nevertheless, if 23andMe wants to prepare for the next decade — a decade defined by genomic rights, they’re going to need people who understand both the cultural fear and the blockchain infrastructure required to neutralize it. I’ve already mapped out the trust framework, permission layer, and architectural pattern around genomic data.
