From the Trades to Tech: Why I Built Home GuardianFrom the Trades

I’ve spent more than 35 years in the home services industry.
Not in a boardroom. Not in Silicon Valley. Not building apps from a coffee shop.
I came from the field.
Long days in attics. Emergency service calls at midnight. Managing technicians. Dealing with upset customers. Building service businesses from the ground up. Learning firsthand what homeowners actually experience when things go wrong inside their homes.
And after decades in the trades, one thing became painfully obvious to me:
The home services industry has always been reactive.
Something breaks. A homeowner panics. A contractor responds. Damage is already done.
That cycle has existed forever.
So I started asking myself a question years ago:
Why can’t homes operate more like modern vehicles?
Cars today can tell you when something is wrong before a breakdown happens. They provide diagnostics, alerts, system transparency, and real-time performance monitoring. Yet the average home the biggest investment most people will ever make still operates mostly blind.
That question became the foundation for Home Guardian.
Building Something That Didn’t Exist
What started as an idea eventually became an obsession.
But I quickly learned that building a hardware and software company is very different from running a service business.
I understood contractors. I understood homeowners. I understood operational pain points.
What I didn’t understand at first was the complexity of manufacturing hardware, software architecture, firmware, compliance, fundraising, patents, logistics, and scaling technology teams.
And that learning curve was brutal.
There were moments where I thought this project might break me mentally, financially, and emotionally.
People who have never built a startup think it’s exciting all the time. They see the headlines, the funding announcements, the product launches, and the flashy side of entrepreneurship.
What they don’t see are the sleepless nights. The failed timelines. The constant pivots. The people who say they support you but disappear when things get hard. The stress of trying to build something that has never truly existed before.
And Home Guardian is not a simple product.
This is a connected infrastructure platform for homes.
A system designed to help contractors and homeowners move from reactive service to proactive protection through real-time monitoring, diagnostics, transparency, and long-term customer retention.
Not just HVAC. Not just plumbing. Not just electrical.
The entire home ecosystem.
This Week Changed Something
This week was one of the most important weeks we’ve had so far as a company.
We brought together our engineering, manufacturing, software, and development teams from overseas, Houston, San Diego, and multiple other locations into one room.
And for the first time, I looked around and realized this was no longer just an idea sitting in my head.
This is becoming real.
Watching world-class engineers, manufacturers, developers, and operators collaborate on something I once sketched out from years of field experience was honestly surreal.
The energy was incredible.
Everyone could feel it.
The mission was clear. The vision was aligned. And the momentum started becoming undeniable.
We also secured major manufacturing progress this week, which is another huge step forward for Home Guardian.
That matters because building hardware at scale is one of the hardest parts of any startup. It requires precision, trust, logistics, engineering discipline, and strong partnerships.
This week validated that we are building those relationships with the right people.
The Bigger Mission
Home Guardian was never built to become another “smart home gadget.”
It was built to solve a real problem for both contractors and homeowners.
Contractors today struggle with retention, transparency, and staying connected with customers between service calls. Homeowners struggle with unexpected failures, hidden issues, and lack of visibility into what’s happening inside their homes.
We believe the future is proactive.
A future where:
- Homeowners have real transparency into their homes
- Contractors can proactively serve customers before emergencies happen
- Data helps prevent failures instead of reacting to them afterward
- Relationships between contractors and homeowners become stronger over time
- The home becomes a connected ecosystem instead of disconnected systems
That’s what we’re building.
Inform. Protect. Connect.
The Most Important Lesson So Far
If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this process, it’s this:
You cannot build something ambitious alone.
You need great people around you. You need advisors smarter than you. You need partners who believe in the mission. And you need family support when things get difficult.
My wife Kristine has been one of the biggest reasons I’ve kept pushing forward. She has seen every high and every low throughout this entire process and has never stopped believing in what we are building. That kind of support matters more than people realize.
We’re Just Getting Started
There is still a long road ahead.
But for the first time in a long time, I can genuinely say it feels like we are entering a completely different phase of this company.
The vision is clearer. The team is stronger. The technology is working. The momentum is building.
And I truly believe Home Guardian has the potential to reshape the future of home services.
From the trades to tech this has been one hell of a ride so far.
And we’re only getting started.
