First of all, I want to say thank you to Pooja Vishwanathan 🦋 for the prompt. I originally wrote this piece for Fiction Shorts, but when I reread it, I realized it didn’t quite fit in the fiction category. It’s more of a feeling I have for the city I live in. So, I decided not to send it there and to publish it myself instead. Please do visit, follow, and even better — write for Fiction Shorts. It’s a home for fiction and challenge lovers!

I lived here. In the city where rainfall dropped like an acoustic rhythm. Thunder and storm created a cacophony of sky orchestra.

This city was known as one with the highest keraunic levels, which meant we had over 300 days of thunder each year. No kidding.

Yep, it flummoxed me why the sound of crashing thunder still startled me, even though I’d heard it flashing and roaring above almost every day.

Rain had always been part of this city. And the aftertaste of the rain was quite a tale to tell. The city dimmed lights wet with raindrops, it hummed the hymn of the romantic souls, and let the fallen leaves dance through the music of the cold wind.

When the rain came pouring down, we let ourselves be immersed in its beauty, listening to the pitter-patter of droplets chattering with each other. They staged a quockerwodger play with the branches and leaves— a symphonic rhythm of God’s blessings upon the earth.

The scent of hot jasmine tea, ginger, and coffee filled the air from stalls along the sidewalk (kaki lima). The thought of Indomie—our famous instant noodle—crossed people’s minds.

Choose your favorite combos: Hot chocolate in your mug, snuggled in your loved one’s arms, or lost in the rhythm while reading your book.

Then which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?

Here is the prompt:

The challenge is to create a vignette (a story of 150 to 300 words long) from the words cacophony, flummox, and quockerwodger.

Here’s my submission for the challenge.

I did it — and now I’ve written more than ten. Yep, it’s addictive. Write it at your own risk. Hahaha…

Thank you for reading. Hope you enjoyed it.
