Ek Onkar: The Infinite Singing Through Guru Nanak Ji

Essentially, we are all the same Being. Yet Being is like an infinite ocean expressing itself through infinite waves.
Every wave is unique, carrying its own form and configuration. Some waves are vast, some gentle, some disappear almost as soon as they arise. Some last long.
In human terms, this uniqueness is reflected in our personalities and in the distinct ways each of us becomes an instrument through which Being expresses itself.
Among these countless expressions, there occasionally appear beings such as Ramana Maharshi, Gautama Buddha, Mahavira, and many others, who conveyed the same essential message of liberation, freedom, and the truth of who we are, each in their own unique way.
Since it is the infinite essence of Being itself appearing through these human forms, stillness somehow spoke through their voices, their mere presence, and their writings.
One such extraordinary expression of truth emerged through the divine instrument of Guru Nanak Ji. The way he expressed truth in his own unique style is truly remarkable.
In particular, “Ek Onkar” captures the essence of it all with striking simplicity and profound depth, together through poetic expression, melody, rhythm, and soulful music.

Ik Onkar (ੴ)
There is One Reality.
Existence is fundamentally one. The apparent separation between me, you, the world, and God is a surface appearance. Everything arises within the same indivisible consciousness or being.
Sat Naam
Its identity is Truth
What is ultimately real does not come and go. Thoughts, emotions, bodies, and identities change, but the underlying knowing/existence remains constant. Truth here is not merely factual truth. It is the eternal reality itself.
Karta Purakh
It is the Creative Being or formless that expresses as infinite forms.
Creation is not separate from the creator. Reality is continuously manifesting itself as life, form, movement, galaxies, breath, and thought. The universe is not a machine built by a distant deity. It is a living expression of the One.
Nirbhau
Without fear.
Fear arises from separation and attachment to a limited self. When all is recognised as One, there is ultimately nothing other to fear. Pure awareness itself is untouched and unthreatened.
Nirvair
Without hatred or without enmity.
Hatred depends on division: “I” versus “other.” In non-duality, the same essence exists in all beings. Compassion naturally arises when separateness softens.
Akaal Moorat
Reality is beyond time, though it appears within time.
The body ages. Thoughts change. Civilisations rise and fall. But the underlying presence and knowing itself. It is not born and does not decay.
Ajooni
Unborn
Ultimate reality does not enter existence because it never began. Forms are born; the essence behind forms is eternal. As waves arise in the ocean, beings arise in consciousness.
Saibhung
Self-existent or Self-Illuminating.
Reality depends on nothing outside itself. Knowing knows itself directly before the concepts, beliefs, or identities appear.
Gur Prasad
Known through the grace of the Guru. But what is Guru? Guru is a Method or a mirror, not a person. The realisation of oneness is not merely intellectual. It flowers through openness, insight, humility, inner stillness, and guidance, whether from a teacher, life, meditation, or direct awakening itself.
“Grace” here can also mean the dissolving of the ego’s struggle.
Jap
Recite, Meditate, Self-inquire or remember thyself
Be in constant touch with your essence. Self-rememberance and abidance may direct you to your natural state. A continuous recognition of unity beneath the changing experience.
Aad Sach, Jugaad Sach, Hai Bhi Sach, Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach
True in the beginning, True through the ages, True now, O Nanak, forever True.
Reality is timeless and unchanged beneath all appearances. Everything perceived changes. The One remains.
Thanks for reading. Ek Onkaar is profound, and every verse points toward the same singular reality. This is just Part 1, and I hope to write more parts in the future. Or perhaps not, who knows whether these parts wish to be written through me at all. You never know.
