Inside Ajax’s Turbulence: Fan Stadium Fury, Off-Field Disarray, and Transfer Controversy

The storied Dutch football club Ajax Amsterdam is experiencing the most tumultuous period in modern history. A series of unfortunate events, both on and off the field, has led to chaos and conflict enveloping the team.

It all began in February 2022 when respected director of football Marc Overmars abruptly left Ajax after admitting to sending inappropriate messages to female colleagues.

This created a leadership void at the club. Then, successful manager Erik Ten Hag departed to coach Manchester United.

Ajax struggled mightily this past 2022–23 season under new coach Alfred Schreuder. They finished third in the league, got knocked out early from European competitions, and lost the domestic cup final.

The expensive new players they had signed failed to deliver.

Significant changes were needed.

This summer, Ajax hired a new director of football, Sven Mislintat, to lead their rebuild. However, results remained poor, and tensions grew between Mislintat and new coach Maurice Steijn over the transfer strategy. Steijn criticized several of Mislintat’s signings.

Things boiled over last weekend when Ajax got smashed 3–0 by rivals Feyenoord in a critical matchup. Angry Ajax fans forced an abandonment of the derby match by throwing flares on the field.

After the game was called off, some fans broke into Ajax’s stadium and vandalized property.

This fan disorder was the final straw after months of team struggles. Then news broke that Mislintat was being investigated over a conflict of interest in a transfer deal this summer.

Ajax quickly parted ways with their new director of football due to a need for internal support.

Now Ajax sit 14th in the table, and their season is spiraling out of control. They need strong leadership on and off the field.

Some have suggested legendary former manager Louis Van Gaal could return in an advisory role to steady the ship.

But big questions remain about how Ajax can regain stability and return to the top of Dutch football, where they belong.
