The Age of Atoms: 7 Female Founders Rebuilding Our Physical World

We’re hearing a lot about full-stack AI, the next Cursor, the next Perplexity, the next YC ABG shipping a chat wrapper that promises to replace your workflow. Those companies get the podcast mention and the X thread. Fine.

But the actually interesting room right now is a different one: women are rebuilding the physical infrastructure the modern world runs on.

Fertilizer production. Battery recycling. The refrigeration unit on a delivery truck. Industrial heat for cement and steel.

These are hardware companies, meaning the product is a physical thing that exists in the real world; a reactor, a kiosk, a thermal battery, a refrigerated trailer. Software is the intelligence layer on top, but the thing itself is made of atoms. That is harder to build, harder to fund, and harder to explain at a dinner party than an AI note-taking app.

There’s a capital logic here worth calling out. VC’s have spent the last decade training to prefer software: fast to ship, cheap to scale, easy to exit.

Hardware is the opposite. It needs pilot plants, unit economics, physical supply chains, years of development before revenue. Women already face a documented funding gap in venture; founding a hardware company on top of that is a deliberate double-down on difficulty.

These seven founders are doing the hard thing because it’s the only thing that actually moves the needle on climate and industrial capacity:

1. Cylib — Lilian Schwich

The Industry: Lithium-ion battery recycling.

The Old Way: End-of-life EV batteries either get shipped overseas or lose most of their lithium to smelting; Europe keeps mining new minerals to keep up.

The Hardware: An end-to-end recycling line inside a former Philips factory in Aachen that physically disassembles battery packs and extracts raw materials.

The Intelligence: A water-based chemical process tuned to recover over 90% of the lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite in battery-grade form.

Schwich’s pitch: “We break down the battery into its raw form, so that we can then re-use it again.”

2. Sesame Solar — Lauren Flanagan

The Industry: Emergency and off-grid power.

The Old Way: When a disaster hits, FEMA sends diesel generators; loud, polluting, and useless once the fuel supply is cut.

The Hardware: The Mobile Nanogrid — a shipping-container-sized unit running on solar panels, battery storage, and green hydrogen; rapidly deployable by the U.S. Army, NGOs, and cities.

The Intelligence: An onboard energy management system that balances solar, battery, and hydrogen to keep essential services running for days without refueling.

3. Ammobia — Karen Baert

The Industry: Ammonia production; the backbone of global fertilizer and a potential clean shipping fuel.

The Old Way: The Haber-Bosch process has barely changed in 100 years. It runs at around 500°C and 200 bar, mostly powered by fossil fuels, and contributes nearly 2% of global greenhouse gases.

The Intelligence: IoT sensors tracking bottle cycles, water quality, and demand; closed-loop logistics that remove the supply chain from the equation entirely.

The Industry: Refrigerated trucking; the cold chain that keeps medicine and food viable in transit.

The Old Way: Delivery trucks run loud, polluting diesel refrigeration units; cold chain breaks quietly spoil vaccines, produce, and seafood every day.

The Hardware: A solar-electric refrigeration unit that retrofits onto existing commercial trucks up to Class 7.

The Intelligence: Embedded AI that manages temperature and energy use in real time, cutting fuel costs and preventing the micro-spoilage most fleets never measure.

Al Hashal: “Cold chain is a legacy industry with clear capital and innovation gap.”

Success in these companies is invisible.

If an AI note-taking app works, you see it on your screen; the product announces itself. If these companies work, the world stays the same. Your medicine arrives usable. The lights stay on after the storm. The soil does not give out. The bottled water on the jobsite does not end up in Lake Michigan. Their success is measured by the absence of catastrophe.

Several of them are really about sovereignty.

Cylib lets Europe close its own battery loop instead of depending on mines and refineries elsewhere. Ammobia makes fertilizer possible without a global shipping route. Sesame Solar gives a community power without a diesel supply chain. These are not just “green” companies; they are resilience companies. They localize production of the things our modern society cannot function without.

And the people building them are doing the hardest version of the job. Software founders in a hot sector raise on a deck. Hardware founders raise on a pilot plant, a grant cycle, and years of proof. For women — who are already raising against a structural capital gap — choosing hardware is choosing the long, expensive, unglamorous path on purpose. It is the opposite of a shortcut.
