[In English and Russian / Двуязычная версия. The Russian original is at the bottom]

I was walking past, and lo and behold — there stands the Soviet Union: a massive fortress, bristling with all kinds of weaponry. Invincible, unconquerable, and shielding a third of the world to boot. Complete and absolute impregnability.

But then, out of nowhere, three little men appear. High-ranking officials, sure, but still — just three little men. They sign a tiny, modest piece of paper, and the fortress crumbles all by itself. Right before my very eyes, it just falls apart. Nobody from the outside so much as lifted a finger against it, yet suddenly its walls turned to dust on their own, leaving you free to go wherever you pleased.

All those who had been sitting behind the walls, keeping a watchful eye on the hostile environment outside, suddenly found themselves standing in the middle of a former fortress, completely wall-less. Many left, going wherever they wanted or could. Others began to wander around aimlessly, until new, clever fellows popped up and advised them to build a new fortress — albeit a smaller one.

I asked these clever fellows why such a sturdy fortress collapsed because of a single sheet of paper signed by three little men. But they just bugged their eyes out and kept rambling on about the “hostile environment” that had bribed those men and a few others to sign that tiny paper.

Pfft! Bullshit. I’m not asking why they signed the paper; I’m asking how such a tiny piece of paper could cause such an impregnable colossus to collapse. I turned around and walked away from them. Who to turn to next, I had no clue. And yet, I wanted to know the truth so desperately it hurt.

Then I noticed a guy sitting there. A perfectly ordinary fella, puffing on a little cigar. I sat down next to him to have a smoke. One thing led to another, and I started lamenting to him that I couldn’t find a single smart soul to explain why such a colossus had collapsed over a mere scrap of paper.

And he says to me, “Oh, come on, it’s not rocket science! Any plumber around here knows the answer to that.” As it turned out, he was a plumber himself, but he made it clear he wasn’t going to spin yarns on an empty throat.

Naturally, I ran to the store. And that’s when he revealed the secret to me — the one that even the plumbers know.

“The issue isn’t the paper, of course,” he says. “The fortress didn’t collapse because of that. It collapsed because while they could pull off all kinds of miracles inside that fortress, they failed to create two basic things: a decent automobile and a clean toilet bowl.

At this point, I interrupted him: “Hold on now, we had cars, and we had toilets — let’s not twist the facts.”

But he fired back: “Those weren’t cars; those were ‘assemble-it-yourself’ kits. And what kind of toilets are those if you can’t even walk into the restroom without rubber boots? Trust me, I know. You see, an automobile is the ultimate embodiment of individual freedom, just as a clean toilet bowl in a spotless restroom is the ultimate embodiment of individual safety. We had neither, but they had both over there. And so, we just grew tired of our stagnant, shitty life. The piece of paper? That was just an excuse.”

I said to him, “And for the sake of such trivial things, we destroyed such perfection?”

And he replied, “Trivial or not, we now drive cars whenever we want, and we do our business in clean toilets.”

Say what you will, but if the plumber isn’t lying, it turns out that great empires collapse over the most trivial things. And they keep telling us: hostile environment, hostile environment! They should have just built clean toilets and decent cars. For everyone, not just for the bosses. If they had, we’d probably still be living in that fortress today.
