Interesting and unexpected facts about Switzerland

Switzerland is one of the most fascinating countries in Europe — and one of the most misunderstood. Everyone knows the chocolate, the watches, and the mountains. Almost nobody knows the rest.

The facts that surprise people most

Switzerland has no official capital. Bern is the Bundesstadt — the federal city, the seat of government — but it has never been formally declared the capital. Most Swiss people don’t think about this. Most foreigners refuse to believe it.

It has a merchant navy — without a sea. Among all landlocked countries in the world, Switzerland operates the largest merchant marine fleet. Ships sail under the Swiss flag from Basel’s Rhine port onto international waters. A navy without a coastline.

Women got the right to vote in 1971. At the federal level. In the half-canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, women couldn’t vote on cantonal matters until 1991 — when the Federal Court forced the change. In one of the world’s oldest democracies.

You can’t own just one guinea pig. Swiss animal welfare law requires guinea pigs to be kept in pairs because they’re social animals. If one dies, there are rental services for companion guinea pigs. This is real.

The Swiss flag is square. Only two sovereign states in the world have square flags: Switzerland and Vatican City.

Fondue wasn’t always the national dish. It became a nationwide symbol only in the 1950s, after an advertising campaign called FIGUGEGL — Swiss German for “Fondue is good and puts you in a good mood.” The Swiss had to be marketed into eating fondue. It worked.

The inventions most people don’t credit to Switzerland

The World Wide Web — created at CERN near Geneva in 1989. Not for social media. For scientists sharing data.

LSD — discovered accidentally in Basel in 1943. April 19th is still called “Bicycle Day.”

Velcro — invented after a walk in the Jura mountains. Burrs on a dog’s fur, studied under a microscope.

Milk chocolate — Daniel Peter, 1875, Vevey.

The typeface Helvetica — 1957, named after Switzerland’s Latin name. You’ve seen it everywhere and never noticed.

• Over 450 varieties of cheese
