Deemed vs Autonomous Universities: Understanding the Key Differences

Deemed universities and autonomous universities are both types of higher education institutions in India, but they differ in their legal status and governing structure.

On the other hand, autonomous colleges are affiliated with a larger university but have the freedom to design their own academic programs, courses, and curriculum. Autonomous colleges are granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission or by the state government, depending on the type of institution.

Unlike deemed universities, autonomous colleges do not have the authority to award degrees. The degrees are awarded by the larger university with which they are affiliated.
