The Myth of Greek Miracles

History is authored by the victors, so whatever we have learned up to this point may or may not be accurate. We aren’t sure of what had actually happened in the ancient world at this point.

If you were to inquire what the greatest civilization ever established is, most would likely respond with ‘Greek Civilization’.

The myth known as the “Greek Miracle”, the idealistic notion that the Greeks were simply genetically or culturally superior and magically created philosophy, mathematics, and science while the rest of the world sat in the dark- was promoted in Western textbooks for a few centuries.

The ultimate historical sponge was the Greek people other than the Romans. Every civilization they encountered had frameworks that they either copied with an optimal method or borrowed for a practical solution. The twist that keeps the Greeks in the “great” category, however, is that they were the best systems integrators rather than merely imitators. They removed the mystique from very useful, regional, or deeply religious secrets from other countries and transformed them into open-source, universal laws.

The Greeks arrived late in the history as their neighbors had been operating sophisticated empires for thousands of years by the time Greece awoke in around 750 BCE from their dark age but they didn’t just stop there, they collected knowledge in such a methodical manner, no one could have done that. For instance, They adapted the Phoenicians’ deep-sea sailing techniques, naval construction, and alphabet to suit their own viewpoint. Modern clocks have 60 minutes and 60 seconds because the Babylonians invented the 360-degree circle, the base-60 arithmetic system, and millennia of unprocessed astronomical data. The Egyptians taught them anatomy, practical geometry, engineering methods, and massive stone architectural styles, which they used to create the new mystery of modern science that we are familiar with today. They build something completely new, pivoting from the Kingdom of Soldiers to the Civilization of thinkers.

We all know that the idea of ‘WHY’ or Logic came from the Greek philosophers, like Aristotle, but before him, there were people who actually used it but their names were not reflected in history properly or have been lost in the evolution of time. While Greek culture celebrated individual, competitive “intellectual brands” (where you signed your name to your scroll and argued with your rivals in public), other great civilizations viewed knowledge as a collective, anonymous asset belonging to the temple, the palace, or the state. The individual genius was stripped away, leaving only the data behind. The “Why” was always present; the other great minds of antiquity simply existed as silent, unnoticed cogs in the enormous machinery of their empires.

Critical thinking and modern philosophy which is the base of modern science today was not entirely invented by the Greeks. They were simply fortunate to live in an open, highly decentralized maritime society where their works were translated and safeguarded by succeeding empires, and their names were signed to their work.
