On 5 February 2026, CERFAM and the HealthyDiets4Africa (HD4A) project consortium — a six-year project on the diversification of food systems funded by the European Union — convened the fifth webinar within the series “A Healthier Future for Africa — A Food Systems Approach to Combatting Malnutrition.”. This webinar, under the theme “Empowering Africa’s Youth for a Food Systems Transformation: Policy, Partnerships, and Strategic Direction,” focused on youth‑led food systems transformation through policy, partnerships, financing, skills, and entrepreneurship development. Moderated by Dr. Marc Nene, Director of CERFAM, who opened the session by recalling that with nearly 60% of Africa’s population under 25 youth stand at the heart of both the challenges and the solutions within food systems, the webinar brought together leading experts working on youth empowerment and agricultural transformation, namely: Dr. Mwaka Namukonda, Executive Coordinator, and Mr. Dalitso Mbewe for The Consortium of African Youth in Agriculture and Climate Change (CAYACC), Mr. Edson Mpyisi, Chief Financial Economist and the Coordinator of the ENABLE Youth Program at the African Development Bank Group, Mr. Ainina Aidara, Technical Specialist, Social Inclusion and Youth Employment, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD’s Regional Office for West and Central Africa), and Prof. Michael Frei, Scientific Coordinator, HD4A Project Consortium. Each expert shared how youth‑centred policy, strategic finance, skills development, and living‑lab innovation hubs can accelerate food systems transformation. Dr. Mwaka Namukonda and Mr. Dalitso Mbewe delivered a joint presentation calling for continental commitments to be translated into national actions that expand financing, market access, and real decision‑making power for young people. Mr. Edson Mpyisi emphasized the transformative role of strategic financing, skills development, and market creation through initiatives such as the Enable Youth Programme. Mr. Aïnina Aïdara highlighted IFAD’s lessons from rural programmes that build inclusive entrepreneurship and improve livelihoods. Prof. Michael Frei showcased HD4A’s Living Labs as practical platforms where youth co‑create, test, and scale solutions that link sustainable production with nutrition outcomes. The webinar reaffirmed a shared message: youth must not only participate in Africa’s food systems — but they must also be empowered to lead their transformation, through coherent policies, catalytic partnerships, and sustained investment from local to continental levels.
