The Leadership Crisis Hiding in

Plain Sight

I’ve been having a series of eye-opening conversations lately with professionals working across various MNCs in Singapore. As I listened to their experiences, a consistent, uncomfortable pattern emerged: a deep-seated disconnect between the requirements of regional leadership and the realities faced by the people holding those titles.

The “Box-Sales” Fallacy in Regional Strategy

Many of these employees described leadership teams that seemed entirely out of their depth. They painted a picture of senior managers who, despite their prestigious titles, lacked the foundational training required for complex regional strategy.

Their approach to business was transactional, the kind of “box-sales” mentality you might find in a retail store like Harvey Norman. While that mindset might drive quick results on a shop floor, it fails spectacularly when applied to enterprise solution sales, where success relies on nuance, long-term partner relationships, and a deep understanding of the end customer’s ecosystem.

“When leadership views partnerships through a retail lens rather than a collaborative one, they miss the pulse of the market entirely.”

The Hiring Paradox

The irony is palpable. Organisations spend an immense amount of time and resources refining their entry-level recruitment. We put junior candidates through multiple interview cycles, psychological assessments, and exhaustive background checks.

Yet, when it comes to the leadership tier, the process seems to dissolve. Too often, senior roles are earned not through demonstrated leadership capability or strategic acumen, but through internal politics or “upward management.”

Why This Matters: The Ecosystem Risk

This isn’t just about poor management style; it’s a systemic risk to business viability. Sales and partner circles, especially in a compact market like Singapore, are surprisingly small. Everyone knows everyone.

When leadership exhibits toxic traits or fails to honour the business's collaborative nature, the damage spreads quickly. It is entirely possible, and increasingly common, for a network of partners to collectively decide to freeze a brand out of a market simply because they refuse to engage with ineffective or abrasive leadership.

What Can We Do?

It is a fact: we have a leadership deficit in many modern corporations. Perhaps it’s time we move beyond passive observation. We need to conduct a serious, transparent study on the state of business leadership.

Whether through comprehensive surveys or anonymous, aggregated sharing, it's important to uncover what truly occurs behind the closed doors of boardrooms. Remember, the price of not acting isn’t just declining morale—it’s also losing valuable market share.
