China’s GDP showed an unprecedented rebound in 2025, but new challenges loom on the horizon in 2026 that could slow this momentum, Cryptopolitan.
- The capital state has shown superior economic performance in 2025, and this positive momentum is expected to continue in 2026, despite diverging forecasts. This news further cements the country’s position as a key power in the global economy.

In 2025, China’s economic machine has entered a new stage of development. For the first time in history, gross domestic product (GDP) surpassed 140 trillion yuan (approximately 20 trillion U. S. dollars), reflecting a steady annualized GDP growth rate of 5%. The gross national income of the country also increased significantly by 5.1%, reaching over 139 trillion yuan in 2025.
This achievement marked the successful completion of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan. The plan is part of a series of five-year strategies that have governed the country’s economy since the 1950s. The Fourteenth Five-Year Cycle is a socio-economic development program covering the period from 2021 to 2025. It was approved by the National People’s Congress in March 2021, after which all the annual economic targets have been consistently implemented for five years.
China ranks second in the world economic ranking behind the United States and continues to gain momentum, showing no signs of slowing down. Analysts predict that 2026 will be another period of productive economic recovery for the country, as last year the economy proved virtually invulnerable to domestic and international shocks affecting other major powers.
The State Bureau of Statistics (SBS) reported GDP growth of 5% in 2025, although the monthly GDP trend paints a different picture, showing a gradual weakening of growth throughout the year.
Quarterly GDP growth started off strong at 5.4% in the first quarter of 2025, followed by a 0.2% decline to 5.2% in the second quarter, 4.8% in the third quarter and 4.5% in the fourth quarter.
Over the course of the year, the overall momentum was markedly reduced by the exhaustion of stimulus measures, weakening domestic demand, and lingering weakness in the real estate sector.
