I’ve devised a bedding solution so radical it may shock you. Mine is called the magnetic levitation bed. Here, the entire bed surface is levitated, but not by one giant levitating sheet, but by a bunch of different mini sheets connected to each other. This gives each levitating sheet segment complete control over how much it can move up and down.

What’s the use of such a contraption, you may ask? Imagine a bed so responsive that it modulates to every curve in your body. It gives you perfect support. The tiles can tilt as well, making the curves super duper responsive. Plus, they don’t need any sensors to make them work. The magnetic bed that the mini tiles float over acts as a sensor as well, identifying areas of high pressure.

If you suffer from a bad back as I do, this type of device is a boon. Imagine a 100-year-old person with a back as straight as a rod. By changing the position of his back subtly as he sleeps, we may straighten the back of even the hunchback of Notre Dame. Other silly features include the ability to rock you to sleep, give you a back massage, etc. But those are secondary; the best feature is, of course, the ability to correct your posture and prevent you from getting a hunched back as you age.

What’s more special? This technology is available to us today. Imagine sleeping on top of a bunch of Beckhoff’s XPlanar tiles. Beckhoff makes these cool tiles that float on top of a planar motor surface, or maybe the entire setup itself is called a planar motor; I’m not sure. However, one thing I’m certain of is that the technology exists and can be implemented as a bed. You know what’s cooler? you wouldn’t need a mattress on top of it either… You could sleep directly on top of the tiles; it would be that comfortable.

So here’s to new ideas. I hope to implement this idea soon and let you know the results. Until then, take care!
