A Conversation We Ought to Have

We have all followed a sat-nav down a road that feels wrong.

One voice says turn left. Instinct says do not. Yesterday mine confidently directed me into a construction site that had been closed for months.

And as I sat staring at orange cones, it occurred to me: The map was precise but wrong, and navigation is more than coordinates.

This is our paradox. Artificial intelligence delivers astonishing accuracy, yet lacks judgement. It excels at the known and the repeatable, yet struggles whenever reality takes an unexpected turn.

Which is where flossing enters the room.

Why Flossing Matters More Than We Admit

Nobody enjoys flossing. We know we should. We avoid it anyway.

Organisations do the same. We polish strategy with KPIs and transformation frameworks, yet plaque accumulates quietly in the gaps.

• Outdated approval chains
• Ritual meetings with no function
• Legacy systems held in place by habit rather than value
• Zombie initiatives that cost without compounding

AI cannot fix this sediment. We must floss it out ourselves.

As Bob Marley might have sung if he worked in architecture, None but ourselves can free our workflows.

Listening to the Authorities, and Noticing What They Do Not Say

Our shelves overflow with credible frameworks.

These frameworks are invaluable, but their silences matter.

Few discuss integrity. Fewer discuss authenticity. Almost none dwell on the tension between long-horizon roadmaps and quarter-by-quarter financial control.

Freedom requires judgement, and frameworks cannot supply it.

Frameworks as Instruments, Not Idols

Frameworks enter boardrooms like scripture: laminated, colour-coded, holy. But a guitar is not music until played.

The OODA loop is jazz, not sprint. The DIKW ladder explains how information becomes knowledge, but wisdom lingers at the bus stop. Chaos Engineering rehearses failure so recovery becomes instinct, and most leaders meet chaos every Monday anyway.

Precision without rhythm is noise. Frameworks need tempo, not worship.

Authenticity and Integrity: The Bassline of Trust

Without bass, zouk collapses into noise. Without integrity, strategy collapses into performance.

Authenticity is not radical transparency, it is directional honesty. It is the leader who admits uncertainty, names trade-offs, and refuses vanity metrics as a proxy for progress.

People sense performative leadership instantly. Algorithms can detect spam. Humans detect insincerity faster.

Authenticity is medicine. Integrity is the frame that holds everything together when technology makes a mistake.

Resilience, Capacity and the Rhythm of Adaptation

Resilience is not avoiding failure. It is recovering with rhythm.

SRE introduced error budgets: too few failures wastes investment, too many dissolves trust. Real resilience lives in the space between.

Throughput can be fast and brittle. Capacity is flexible and alive. One keeps pace, the other keeps possibility.

The best organisations play both like guitar and drums. Steady rhythm beneath creative improvisation.

The Real Tension: Roadmap vs Finance

This is the dance that keeps executives up at night.

Roadmaps reach for the future. Finance protects the present.

One lives in possibility, the other in accountability. It is waltz meeting breakdance.

Seven Flossing Rituals That Keep Organisations Healthy

This is what organisational flossing looks like in practice:

• Decision audits, track when AI intervenes or fails, not to blame but to learn
• Algorithmic sabbaths, one day per month with reduced automation to reveal dependency
• Meeting hygiene, if no one can state the purpose, cancel it and cancel it again
• Failure rehearsal, chaos engineering for humans, if losing one expert breaks the system, plaque is present
• Capacity sprints, a week spent removing friction rather than building net-new features
• Cross-functional jam sessions, finance and architecture together not to align but to improvise
• Narrative audits, listen to the stories teams tell, complaints reveal sediment

Flossing is informal, mundane, unglamorous. Like dentistry, neglect becomes expensive.

Closing Reflection: From Maps to Music

We began with a sat-nav that knew the route but not the reality. AI is the same. It navigates but does not understand.

Human wisdom is music. Messy, improvisational, imperfect, alive.

When we floss out old processes, we make space for music. We make tempo possible. We allow maps to guide rather than govern.

Queen said it plainly. The show must go on. Not flawlessly, but rhythmically.
