Why I Prefer Dating Outside My Culture

How swapping familiar cultural norms for refreshing conversations changed my approach to love.

Every relationship teaches us something about ourselves, but dating outside our culture can completely redefine what we expect from a partner. For me, choosing to date foreigners opened the door to stimulating conversations and refreshing personal freedom, leading me the way for a deeper connection that completely transformed my love life.

I once dated a white man before, which reinforced my dating preferences. In my case, maybe it’s because most of the Latinos I’ve met have always wanted or treated their women as housewives. Now, there’s nothing wrong with this lifestyle, but as my family’s breadwinner, that’s not what I want. I want to thrive in my career and feel great fulfillment whenever I achieve the milestones I’ve set for myself.

It didn’t help that they seemed like players. All credit goes to my male relatives who change girlfriends like they change clothes and cheat. They’re suave and romantic, sure, but they act like that with every woman.

But that said, I’m not saying that all Latinos are like this and that you shouldn’t date them. I simply had a bad experience and decided to look toward other options—white men.

It so happened that I had better dating experiences with white men. Perhaps it’s their culture, but they’re well-versed in things that I wouldn’t even imagine discussing at my family table, like politics, gender roles, and the like. Their openness made me feel a new sense of freedom.

Conversations with them are also more stimulating, perhaps because we’re learning from each other. When dating someone from my culture, there isn’t really anything new to talk about, especially about our childhood. But I always discover something new when dating a foreigner.
