Why We Shouldn't Be Afraid of Sad Endings

One of the reasons many people hesitate to watch stories like The King's Warden is simple: they know it won't end happily. We often look for stories that offer comfort, where love survives, justice prevails, and everyone gets the ending they deserve. Sad endings feel unfair. They leave us with an ache that lingers long after the credits roll. But perhaps that lingering ache is exactly why they matter.

The truth is, life rarely guarantees a happy ending. Sooner or later, all of us will encounter endings we never wished for: the death of someone we love, dreams that fail despite our efforts, relationships that cannot be saved, or paths that simply do not lead where we hoped. These experiences are painful not because they are unusual, but because they are deeply human. A tragic story does not introduce us to suffering; it merely reminds us of a reality we already share.

What I admire about stories with heartbreaking endings is their refusal to lie. They do not promise that love will always conquer loss or that goodness will always be rewarded. Instead, they show us something quieter and perhaps more beautiful: that meaning can still exist even when happiness does not. A life can be valuable even if it ends too soon. A love can be real even if it cannot last forever. A journey can be worth taking even if it ends in failure.

Maybe that is why sad endings deserve to be romanticized, not because pain itself is beautiful, but because they teach us to cherish what existed before the ending arrived. They remind us that impermanence is not the opposite of beauty; it is often the reason beauty feels so precious in the first place. And if life itself is filled with inevitable endings, perhaps learning to embrace them through stories is one way of learning how to face our own.
