Hauntings can occur in a number of places and there is no exception as to what place might be haunted. Centuries old buildings. Cemeteries. Hospitals. Even hotels. And then you have the sort of places where ghosts might be the last thing on your mind.

Like underground metro stations for instance. From phantom trains to vanishing figures, here are a few metro stations that are rumored to be haunted.

👻 Silverpilen “the silver arrow”

Stockholm, Sweden

The Stockholm metro station in Sweden might sound like your typical city metro station. Busy, always moving, and full of life. It is also the site of the world’s longest art gallery making the station visually impressive and an inspiration for artists everywhere.

But once night falls, the tracks rumble to life as a phantom train materializes.

It is called Silverpilen or “the silver arrow” — phantom metro train said to run through the Stockholm metro station in the middle of the night.

The ghostly train stops at stations. Stations that have been abandoned decades ago.

Legend says those that board the silver arrow take an unsuspecting and perhaps equally terrifying train ride into another dimension. Maybe even the “other side”. Those that are lucky to return do so many years later. But maybe they aren’t so fortunate after all. Those that return are completely changed as though they saw something unimaginable. Something macabre.

Some passengers never return.

👻 Rabindra Sarobar “paradise of suicide”

Kolkata, India

It is not only known as one of Kolbata’s most haunted places but also Kolkata’s most haunted station.

Rabindra Sarobar got its nickname from the high number of suicides that have occurred within the station. With such a dark history, it is no wonder why this metro station in Kolkata, India is haunted.

High activity of unexplained paranormal phenomena have occurred at night ranging from disembodied voices to vanishing apparitions.

There have been numerous incidents in which a metro driver swore to have seen someone standing on the tracks or standing in the tunnel. When they hit their emergency brake and went to investigate, there was nothing there.

Many commuters have even sworn to have seen shadow figures walking along the platform before vanishing into thin air and have heard moans coming from the station.

Could these be the souls that have met their tragic end?

👻 Laurier Metro Station

Montreal, Canada

This is another metro station that has a dark history behind it. Incidents ranging from fires, suicides, construction accidents, and even electrocutions have all been recorded here.

It is said that many refuse to ride on the Laurier metro unless they have absolutely no other choice. Often, the refusal to ride comes from hearing the urban legend of “the ghost seats”.

If you sit in the last row of the passenger seats, turn around if you dare. There on the wall, you will see the faded silhouette of a person. Could they be the lingering souls that have never left the station?

Of course, it’s probably nothing more than the markings made when someone leans against the wall, right?

👻 Astor Place subway station

New York City, United States

Within the tunnels of this station, below the streets of New York City, there have been sightings of a phantom train.

Those who ride via this specific station should be careful of the subway they get on. Aboard a subway at the Astor Place subway station, and it might not be a real train at all.

Sightings of a phantom subway car have been reported as far back as the early 20th century. It is said that in the dead of night, a phantom subway car is said to approach the station. Take a closer look, and one will see that no passengers can be seen. This ghostly train is then said to vanish into thin air down the dark tunnels.

The next time you visit a city and use the Metro station, you never know what might lie beneath you or what you might encounter. It could easily be a ghost.
