There are approximately 400,000 black bear in the U.S. today. For every black bear in the U.S. there are almost 1000 people.
40,000–50,000 black bears are legally killed by hunters in the U.S. every year which is 10–12% of the population. To put that in perspective 10–12% of the human population is 33.5 -40.2 million people. Which is not a trivial amount.
Black bears once ranged across most of North America, now they are confined to 60% of their historic habitat. A single adult male can roam 100+ square miles.
Fragmented habitats force them into conflict with humans-leading to more “nuisance” killings.
Bears eat berries, nuts and seeds and then spread them miles away in their scat helping forests regenerate.
A Study in the Journal of Ecology suggests that bears disperse more seeds than other mammals or birds.
They also help regulate rodent and dear populations, preventing overgrazing that destroys habitats.
This photo is from a game camera I put in front of a fountain I built — specifically to attract wildlife to my yard. I couldn’t be more thrilled!
