Abolitionist Faction Wants Control of Oklahoma’s Republican Party

Republican Party — censuring resistant legislators, targeting moderate incumbents in primaries and placing its members in state party leadership.

Ben Fenwick reports that the movement, which originated in Norman and calls itself the Abolitionists, goes significantly further than the traditional pro-life position. It holds that any substance or procedure that interferes with a fertilized egg constitutes murder, including Plan B and some forms of birth control. Under their model, women who leave Oklahoma for legal abortions in other states could face murder investigations.

In 2025, State Sen. Dusty Deevers introduced legislation that would have subjected women to the same criminal standards as anyone else accused of homicide if they terminated a pregnancy by any means. The bill failed in committee on a bipartisan 6–2 vote. The Oklahoma Republican Party subsequently censured the four Republicans who voted against it, calling their opposition a violation of the word of God.

Movement leaders have now coined those four legislators the Unfavorable Four and pledged to end their political careers. Activists also confronted the pastor of a Republican senator’s church after he voted against the bill, with protesters reportedly calling a congregant a witch.

The current state GOP chairwoman and vice chairman are both members of the abolitionist movement. An associate professor at the University of Oklahoma compared the strategy to the Tea Party’s use of ideological primary challenges to push the Republican Party further right.

Governor Vetoes OETA Extension Gov. Kevin Stitt vetoed a continuation of Oklahoma’s state-funded TV station, contending taxpayer money shouldn’t subsidize public broadcasting. The Oklahoma Educational Television Authority would reach its sunset date July 1 and have a year to wind down its operations if the governor’s veto is not overridden or counteracted with other legislation. Grand jury: Governor Helped Free Friend From Prison An investigation by the state’s multicounty grand jury found that a close friend of Gov. Kevin Stitt got out of prison in just 73 days of an 8-year sentence after Stitt made multiple calls on her behalf to the top official at the Department of Corrections. [The Oklahoman ▲]
