Is Hyrox Athlete shirtless?

Nonmembers please read here.

I am on a hyrox wave. Last week, it happened as close as home in Bangalore and Ultrahuman, the organisers didnt leave any stones unturned for marketing. Still, after a week, my feed is filled with Hyrox updates. Could it be because my partner attended it as well, or are the algorithms that efficient to give me his interest feeds too? I would be interested in more of that! Algos, please bring on…

Anyways, HYROX races are intense and combine running with functional workouts (sledge pushes, burpees, rowing). So intense it is! It’s an understatement. Being a spectator itself was exhausting. Hyrox events usually take place in massive convention centres or exhibition halls. While these spaces are air-conditioned, they aren’t designed for thousands of people doing high-intensity cardio simultaneously. Body temperature rises quickly, and removing a shirt helps with cooling and sweat evaporation. A soaked shirt can become heavy, cause chafing, or restrict movement during exercises like wall balls or lunges. Running shirtless eliminates that friction.

Was at the event, and most of the athletes chose to show off their upper bodies. Was a spectacle for the first 1 minute, it was like “wow, what fit bodies and that too shirtless”. Then, the variety and stupendous qualities of it, I grew over it. It wasn’t a big deal. Anymore, yet another person passing by, ofcourse putting in a lot of effort to finish in his best abilities.

There is undeniably a cultural element to this shirtlessness. Hyrox has branded itself as the “World Series of Fitness,” and the aesthetic often mirrors CrossFit, which was hugely popular at one point. Now this is the newest wave, which the organisers are truly cashing in on. Charging a bomb and providing zilch facilities for it. For instance, the changing rooms and toilets were ill-equipped. Did observe that the cool-down area was so small not enough for all finsihing to strech. The running surface wasn’t even. This was the case in Bangalore. But the paricipants in the Bangkok ones says there it was 10 times better facilities there. So “Chalta hai” of indian attitude did creep into this European venture here too.

Coming back to the bare chests. The main focus. For many, reaching the level of fitness required to finish a Hyrox is a massive achievement. Removing the shirt is a rite of passage and a way to celebrate that hard work. On social media, the “shirtless hybrid athlete” is the dominant image of the sport, which influences new racers to follow suit.

Are we forgetting the “better” half of the athletes? In Bangalore, gym owners and organizers reported a near 1:1 ratio in participation between men and women. So, where are these comforts of running not for them? Aren’t their performance lagged by heavy swaet ladden t-shirts? Aren’t there any rules that make it equal for all?

May be it can be a very good product introduction here, hyrox worthy T shirts can be introduced, yet another product to sell in the mix. Cash it on, why not?

No, we know, we cant go shirtless, as the above mentioned 1 min hype would be lasting the whole event, of course, there would be a surge in spectator tickets. And we don’t want to be that spectacle. But there can be a midway.

Just asking? As usual we keep asking, someone might comprehend someday.
