Lessons I’m Learning as an Adult Child of Divorce

I’m learning that two things can be true at the same time. Someone can hurt you and still love you. Someone can make mistakes and still be a good person. And sometimes, the older you get, the more you realise life was never as black and white as it felt when you were younger.

I’m learning that children don’t always grow up with the full picture. You grow up around emotions, tension, opinions and silence, and naturally you build your understanding from that. You don’t question it because you’re a child. You trust the adults around you. It’s only when you become an adult yourself that you start seeing the gaps between what happened, what you were told, and what was actually going on underneath it all.

I’m learning that grief doesn’t always look the way you expect it to. Sometimes it’s not only about losing someone physically. Sometimes it’s grieving time, relationships, missed moments, or the version of family you wish existed. And sometimes those feelings hit at the worst possible time, when life is already heavy enough.

I’m learning that getting to know a parent as an adult can feel strangely emotional. Especially when you realise they’re not the person you convinced yourself they were, or maybe not the person others convinced you they were either. There’s something painful about realising how much time has passed, but also something healing about finally forming your own opinion and your own relationship.

I’m learning that anger gets exhausting. Holding onto blame for years takes so much energy, and eventually life humbles you enough to realise everybody is carrying something. Hurt people hurt people. Adults are flawed. Families are complicated. And sometimes there isn’t one villain, just a lot of pain that was never dealt with properly.

I’m learning that life becomes very real very quickly. One minute you’re overthinking work emails and what people think of you, and the next you’re sitting with fears you never imagined your family would face. It changes your perspective completely. Suddenly, time matters more. Conversations matter more. People matter more.

I’m learning that healing isn’t dramatic most of the time. It’s small. Quiet. It’s replying to a message. Going for hot chocolate. Sitting in a car talking. Going on runs. Slowly allowing yourself to see someone differently without guilt attached to it.

And honestly, I’m still learning. Some days I feel angry. Some days sad. Some days grateful that despite everything, there’s still time to know people more deeply than before.

But I think the biggest lesson I’m learning is this: family relationships don’t have to stay frozen in the version you inherited as a child. Sometimes, as an adult, you get to rebuild them for yourself.
