Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic hands-on: The rotating bezel is back!

The newest watch from Samsung brings back a fan favourite feature, with the rotating bezel adding intrigue to a classically designed smartwatch. Cam has worked in online tech reporting since 2010. His responsibilities at Pocket-lint include producing and hosting quality, personable and informative YouTube videos on our growing channel as well as writing reviews and features. Prior to Pocket-lint he honed his video skills at PhoneDog, and wrote for 9to5Google. Other roles have seen him start projects from zero and grow their audience — covering Google, Apple and T-Mobile in depth. In that time, his areas of focus and expertise have mostly been smartphones and wearables, but he has a musician’s ear and is equally adept at judging headphones and audio products. He’s a graduate in Film and TV Production, and in his spare time, he’s usually running, playing the guitar, doing yoga or training in the arts of movie and coffee snobbery.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 hands-on review: familiar yet different

Next-gen wearable sticks to what Samsung does best. Screen and CPU improvements could make the Galaxy Watch 6 a stellar smartwatch That includes Samsung Health, for pooling all your fitness info from the optical and electrical heart rate sensors. It’ll track ECG, blood oxygen, skin temperature, heart rate and even blood pressure, as long as you’ve got access to a third-party monitor to calibrate it first. There’s an option to set personalised heart rate zones now, to help you stay in fat-burning or cardio zones while exercising, and a dedicated track running mode. We won’t know how accurate the fitness tracking data is until we get one in for review, but previous Samsung efforts have been pretty good on that front.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 hands-on: The best of both worlds

We can’t gush enough about the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic’s rotating bezel, but the base Watch 6 may still be better for most. I will say that the Classic is built for larger wrists and that I don’t think anyone needs the 47mm watch, nor the 44mm Watch 6. They’re just too big for most people. The 1.3-inch Classic has the display space you need and is already more than heavy enough, so I’d suggest choosing the “smaller” watch if you decide to pre-order the Watch 6. If you think you need a 1.5-inch display, look at the Galaxy Watch 6 before the Classic.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 hands-on review: This is what I’ve been waiting for

What we think of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic so far Some keys apps received an upgrade this year, namely Camera Controller and Samsung Wallet. I love camera remote in the iPhone and Apple Watch system, but it’s clear that the Galaxy Watch 6 is well-poised to leverage the Flex Mode on the newly announced Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 for remote content capture. Wallet is more intuitive, too, especially for getting things like concert tickets and boarding passes on your wrist so you’re less reliant on your phone.

I love the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic because of one important feature

The minute I put the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic on, I knew it was the new Samsung smartwatch for me, and a big reason is the return of the rotating bezel. Samsung’s pushing improved sleep tracking through the activated-at-launch skin temperature sensor, along with the expected blood oxygen monitoring, snore recordings, and sleep stage monitoring. There’s a new Sleep Coaching program that provides advice over a four-week period on how to improve your sleep. Outside of this, there’s a new Track Run feature that uses GPS to identify the running track you’re on and a Custom Workout feature so you can build a bespoke exercise program instead of tracking each exercise individually.

I wore the Galaxy Watch 6 and Samsung hoped I’d never take it off

With a bevy of new sleep tracking and fitness tools, Samsung isn’t forgetting the most important factor of the Galaxy Watch 6 series: comfort Will is the Phones Editor at Android Police, which means he usually has a dozen different smartphones on his desk at any given time. He covers everything from leaks of your next phone to the components that’ll power it. He’s got plenty of opinions about the current state of Android phones — thoughts you’ll read in his reviews, editorials, and more. You’ll also find him writing up our buyer’s guides, where he hopes to help shoppers make the right choice in their next phone. Will appears on the Android Police podcast, where he occasionally taunts his co-hosts with bad opinions about smartwatches and charging cables, and writes AP’s weekend polls. In his spare time, he produces podcasts, rewatches the same 37 films, and pretends not to have a never-ending backlog of video games. He lives in Buffalo, NY and is willing to give you chicken wing recommendations at any time. Just ask.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series is all about the bezels

The physical rotating bezel is back in all its glory. Most of the “big” changes on the Galaxy Watch 6 series will come from software updates. Namely, these will be the first watches to launch with Google’s Wear OS 4 platform and Samsung’s One UI 5 Watch skin. Wear OS 4 is supposed to bring better battery life, cloud backups, and a new watchface format. As for One UI 5 Watch, Samsung announced what to expect a while back. The main updates include improved emergency SOS calling, personalized heart rate zones, and the ability to view more sleep tracking details from the wrist. There’ll also be an updated Sleep Mode that dims the display and utilizes invisible infrared sensors instead of green LED light for heart rate. The Galaxy Watch 6 series also gets Samsung’s new passive irregular heart rhythm alerts, which monitor for signs of atrial fibrillation in the background.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 vs. 6 Classic vs. 5 Pro: New Watch or Sporty Watch?

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic are now on sale alongside last year’s Watch 5 Pro. Both Galaxy Watch 6 editions will ship with Google’s Wear OS 4, and the Watch 5 Pro will be getting an update to that software version. In addition to the various size differences between each of the watches, the batteries range from 300mAh for the smaller Galaxy Watch 6 and 6 Classic, 425mAh for the larger watches and 590mAh for the Watch 5 Pro. We’ll have to test the Galaxy Watch 6 to see how their batteries hold up, but my colleague Lexy Savvides found in her Galaxy Watch 5 Pro review that the battery would usually last about 2.5 days.
