Masterclass 2- Clase Azul: I Went for the Bottle, but Left with the Story.

Clase Azul Masterclass

Clase Azul Masterclass

If you ask me why I signed up for the Clase Azul Masterclass… I’ll be honest. It wasn’t because of the tequila. It was because of the bottle. 😂The white ceramic, the hand-painted blue patterns… It looked more like a piece of art than a bottle of tequila. So… I signed up.

At the beginning of the class, the brand ambassador asked, “What made you interested in Clase Azul?” I answered honestly. “The bottle.” 🤣

As the session went on, I became even more fascinated by it. So I raised my hand and asked what was probably the least professional — but most genuine — question of the evening.

“Can I just buy the bottle without the tequila? The bottle is absolutely beautiful, but buying the whole thing is a little beyond my budget.”

There was a brief silence. Then…

The whole room burst into laughter. 😂 Even the brand ambassador laughed.

But I was completely serious. I really just wanted that beautiful bottle.(Unfortunately… the answer was no. 🤣)

Instead of repeatedly telling us why Clase Azul is expensive, the ambassador showed us the journey.

Blue Weber Agave growing in the highlands. Years of waiting before harvest. Mexican artisans carefully shaping, painting and finishing every ceramic bottle by hand.

Halfway through the video, I had one thought. “Well… now I completely understand why it’s expensive.” It isn’t just tequila. It’s time, craftsmanship, patience and the people behind every bottle.

Then came the tasting. My favourite was the Añejo. Smooth, rounded and elegant. Every flavour arrived gently, without competing for attention.

Then came the Ultra. Everyone described it as smoky. My brain translated it differently.

It reminded me of char kway teow from a hawker stall where we jokingly blame the uncle for smoking while cooking. 🚬🍜😂

If you’re Malaysian…you probably know exactly the smoky flavour I’m talking about.

There was also the Plata + Reposado Blend. I actually enjoyed both individually. But somehow, together, they left a slightly bitter finish that wasn’t quite my preference.

That was when I realised something. The most expensive tequila doesn’t have to be my favourite. And someone else’s favourite doesn’t have to become mine. I’m learning to trust my own palate.

When the masterclass ended, I didn’t bring home that beautiful ceramic bottle. Instead, I brought home something even more valuable.

A deeper appreciation for the people, the patience and the process behind every bottle.

I think I’ll continue attending tequila masterclasses whenever I get the chance. Not because I want to drink more. But because I want to understand tequila better…and along the way, understand my own palate.

After all… some things are worth learning slowly.

If you’ve tried Clase Azul before, I’d love to hear how you remember them tasting. Everyone experiences flavour differently and that’s what makes the journey so interesting. Feel free to share your favourite expression or your funniest tasting note in the comments!
