stop intellectualizing and start feeling
I promise you, that your emotions are not the enemy

We often think the opposite of avoidance is awareness. But I feel that they both are different sides of the same coin. Avoidance makes you run from your feelings.
But some people don't just run from their feelings. They study them. They learn the psychology behind them, trace them back to childhood, identify the cognitive distortions, and explain every emotional reaction with remarkable precision. They can tell you exactly why they are hurting.
What they cannot tell you is when they last allowed themselves to simply hurt. If you are someone like this, then let me tell you — intellectualization is often mistaken for emotional courage because it looks like self-awareness, but there is a difference between understanding a feeling and experiencing it. One keeps you close to the emotion. The other keeps you safely outside of it. Feelings are to human existence what color is to a painting. Imagine standing before a masterpiece from which every color has been removed. The outlines would remain. The structure would remain. You could still identify the subject and appreciate the technique.
But something fundamental would be missing. The warmth of a sunset, the depth of an ocean, the violence of a storm, the tenderness of a gaze can still be seen with lines, but not felt as deeply as with colours. In much the same way, thoughts may provide the structure of our lives, but feelings provide their richness. Love, grief, wonder, longing, joy, heartbreak, awe-these are not flaws in the human experience. They are what transform existence from a sequence of events into a life that is actually lived. When we intellectualize every feeling, we often treat emotions as distortions of reality. But feelings do not distort our humanity; they colour it.
We often see our emotions as a result of cognitive distortions. We push away our emotions by overly analyzing the situation to understand the pattern; we greatly try to uncode the mystery like a detective solving a crime scene.
We try to understand the context behind behavior, try to explore psychology to understand the feelings, without actually giving us time and place to actually feel those feelings.
For example, you deeply analyze your parent’s childhood, their experiences, and their setbacks, which made them a bad parent to you instead of mourning the childhood you didn’t have due to being born in a broken family because that feels more mature.
The same patterns can be repeated everywhere, and you no longer feel; you just understand. And while all of that understanding may be true, it quietly becomes a substitute for feeling.
Grief feels messy. Sorrow feels unbearable. Anger feels uncomfortable. So we choose the explanation over the experience.
Now you are not scared of losing people; you just have an anxious attachment style. You're no longer angry at your parents; you just recognize the generational trauma. You're not devastated by someone's actions. You're just analyzing why it triggered you. You're not sad over your breakup; you're just reflecting on the incompatibility. You're not hurt by what they said. You're just identifying their cognitive distortion. You're not feeling the pain. You're writing a thesis on it.
We become fluent in the language of emotions without ever allowing ourselves to speak them. The tragedy of intellectualization is not that it makes us ignorant of our feelings. It is that it allows us to understand them from such a distance that we never truly experience them. And emotions that are understood but never felt do not disappear. They wait.
Until one day the dam breaks under the weight of everything we were too busy explaining to grieve.
Your suffering is not a puzzle.
Your emotions are not the enemy.
