Giveon’s Art: My Poison and Antidote

Giveon’s song “Like I Want You” introduced me to his music in 2020. I remember checking him out on Apple Music while the song played in the background of a heartbreaking scene in my favorite TV series, All American.

One interesting thing about me is that I listen to songs to relax my nerves, study, or sleep well. While I have a few favorite artists and genres, I enjoy discovering artists from the playlists of movies and TV shows, or even from features with popular artists. So, finding Giveon that day made me feel really good; it was the start of a new journey.

Giveon’s music is known for its emotional depth, soulful quality, and storytelling. His lyrics are often introspective and personal, and his rich and textured voice sets him apart from other artists.

But Giveon’s art is food to me — fuel for my emotions. His songs are like a warm embrace, a gentle balm for my soul or a cool breeze on a hot day. They speak to my deepest feelings and help me to process my feelings, whether I’m happy, sad, angry, or confused.

I believe that it is possible to appreciate an artist’s work while also acknowledging their personal flaws, so I couldn’t help but do a quick search about Giveon’s dating history. My curiosity got the better of me, I guess.

His only public relationship was with another artist, Justin Skye (one of my favorites). It ended really badly, with her releasing a song called “What a Lie” after they broke up. Giveon responded by releasing a song called “Lie Again” shortly after. Oh, Hollywood!Turns out, Giveon cheated on Skye and then tried to play the victim. Classic Giveon.

This simple search gave me a glimpse into who Giveon really is.

He is a raw nerve, exposed and vulnerable. His cockiness and nonchalance are a shield, protecting him from the world and his own pain. He doesn’t care how people perceive him. He’s selfish, but it’s a survival instinct. He’s learned that no one else will put him first, so he has to do it for himself, fair enough if I may say.

Giveon is a complex and contradictory person. He’s talented and successful, but he’s also insecure and emotionally damaged. He’s capable of great love, but he’s also capable of great hurt.

Sometimes I wonder who or what broke this young man, what made him so toxic. Whoever they are and whatever they did, I’m grateful it happened.
