Dual-diagnosed Addict in Recovery — What Is It?
& What can we do about it, helpful links included.

Together, anything is possible.
Being “dual-diagnosed” means living with both:
- Substance use disorder (addiction to alcohol, drugs, or another substance), and
- Mental health condition (like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, ADHD, etc.)
Both of these conditions are present at the same time and interact, often in a way that makes each ONE WORSE if the other is not treated.
This is also called “CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS” or “DUAL-DIAGNOSED.”
When someone says they are a dual-diagnosed addict in recovery like myself, it usually means:
- We have struggled with ADDICTION and at least ONE diagnosed mental health disorder.
- We are no longer actively using (or are working toward that) and are engaged in some form of recovery:
- therapy
- medication
- support groups
- rehab
- or other structured help
Our recovery plan is designed to address both the addiction and the mental health condition at the same time, because treating only one tends to lead to relapse.

Recovery is a lifestyle, not a destination!
Having both ADDICTION & MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION changes what recovery looks like in a few ways:
- **Symptoms overlap and feed each other.** For example, depression can make someone more likely to drink or use substances to “numb out,” and substance use can then deepen the depression.
- **Relapse risk can be higher.** If the mental health side is not managed (like untreated anxiety or trauma), the distress can trigger cravings and relapse, even if the person is trying to stay sober.
- **Integrated treatment is key.** The most effective approach is to treat both conditions together: therapy, possible medications, and support that acknowledges both addiction and mental health as part of one whole picture.
- **Recovery is often an ongoing process.** Recovery usually involves long-term support, lifestyle changes, and sometimes ongoing medication to help stabilize mood, sleep, and stress, alongside tools to stay sober.

Recovery for a dual-diagnosed person often includes:
- **Therapy** Such as individual counseling, trauma therapy, CBT/DBT, or group therapy that addresses both substance use and mental health.
- Medication (when appropriate) Psychiatric medications (for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc.) and sometimes medications for addiction (like those that help with cravings or withdrawal) are used together under medical supervision.
- Support networks This may include 12-step or other mutual-help groups, dual-diagnosis groups, peer support, and supportive friends or family.adf+1
- Lifestyle and coping changes Building routines around sleep, nutrition, movement, stress management, and healthy coping skills to replace using substances and to manage mental health symptoms.hcrcenters+1
- **Understanding relapse differently** Relapse, if it happens, is seen not as a “failure” but as a sign that something in the recovery or mental health plan needs adjustment.
The HoPeFuL PaRt
Even though we may be dual-diagnosed, recovery may be more complex. Research and clinical experience show that people with co-occurring disorders do recover and build stable, meaningful lives, especially when both conditions are treated together.
Recovery might be less about “being cured” and more about learning to manage both conditions in a way that allows for connection, purpose, and stability over time!
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I’m praying, trusting, and believing that with God’s help and with one another beside us, there is nothing we can’t walk through together.
