The fundamental tension the creators of CC were trying to resolve

Creators protected their works through the use of copyright tools, as result of using these copyright tools on their works became outaded, due to their creative style and copyright restrictions, but with the introduction of creative common license providing alternative ways of sharing their works essentially reduced the tention for copyright holders where they are able to share their works widely to the global space.

The Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act

Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act was passed in 1998 and it was the reasons why Creative Commons License was created. The Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) of the United States of America ensured that additional 20 years was added to the existing and new works of creators or authors who have their works in the public over a certain period of time. The USA copyright law used to be 50 years but with the introduction of Copyright Term Extention Act saw it extend to 70 years. The Copyright Term Extension Act is also known as the Mickey Mouse Protect Act, because it was during that period when the Mickey Mouse Cartoons was created.

Eldred vs Ashcroft

Eldred vs Ashcroft was the case on the CTEA that was passed, they wanted to ensure that works created by creators can easily be available in the public space or domain under an alternative license that can be used by users, the case went on to the U.S suprem court and they ended up losing the case.

The number of CC-licensed works available today

In the open community and other communities using creative commons linces, it has been estimated to have over 10 billion use cases of creative commons works in the public domain, of which I personal believe might increase in the future.

The Creative Commons Commumity (CCC) is very opened to join, you can join them on their Zulip Channel as well as their newsletters for engagement and support, also if there is no direct community in your country you can join a wikimedia usergroup or a community that facilitate training and activities around the usage of cc tools.
