The World’s First Trillionaire Now Owns the War. Literally.

Everyone is writing about the number. Almost nobody is writing about what SpaceX actually is now. One company controls the satellites that run a live war, the AI being trained on global data, and the platform where information wars are fought. It just went public. And one man holds 40 percent of it.

Elon Musk became the world’s first trillionaire on Friday.

With SpaceX opening on the Nasdaq at 150 dollars a share, his stake in SpaceX was worth more than 766 billion dollars. Combined with his Tesla stake, worth 280 billion dollars, his net worth from both companies reached roughly 1.05 trillion dollars. He is now worth more than the next five richest billionaires in the world combined. His personal net worth is larger than the national GDP of Taiwan, Ireland or Sweden.

That number is the headline every outlet ran with yesterday, and it deserves the attention it received. But the number is not the part of this story that should be keeping defense ministries and election security agencies awake tonight.

The part that should is what SpaceX actually is now, and what just became publicly traded alongside it.

What Is Actually Inside the Company That Just Went Public

SpaceX builds and operates spacecraft, including thousands of satellites deployed in support of its Starlink satellite internet service. Earlier this year, the Texas based firm merged with xAI, a Musk led artificial intelligence company that offers the chatbot Grok.

Read that sentence slowly. The rocket company merged with the AI company. The AI company that makes Grok also owns X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Which means the entity that went public on Friday under the ticker SPCX is not simply a space launch business.

It is the company that operates Starlink, the satellite network that has become the primary battlefield communications infrastructure for Ukraine’s military, for numerous government agencies, and increasingly for militaries and emergency services around the world that have no alternative at comparable scale.

It is the company that owns and trains Grok, an AI model that competes directly with the systems we wrote about when discussing how Chinese AI models are spreading globally and how AI generated content is reshaping wartime information.

And it is the company that owns X, the platform where, as we documented in our piece on the first AI war, deepfakes of military strikes, fabricated casualty footage and state propaganda from multiple governments circulate to hundreds of millions of users during active conflicts.

Satellite infrastructure for war. The AI training on the data that war generates. The platform where the information war about that same war is fought.

One company. One IPO. One controlling shareholder holding roughly 40 percent.

Why Going Public Does Not Mean What People Think It Means

The instinct when a company goes public is to assume that ownership becomes more distributed, more accountable, more subject to checks. In some ways that is true. SpaceX is now subject to SEC disclosure requirements, quarterly earnings calls and the scrutiny of public market analysts in a way it never was as a private company.

After the IPO, SpaceX will be subject to new attention from public investors and regulators, which could test the company’s long term ambitions. It remains to be seen whether the valuation can maintain or whether it will come down once it is under the scrutiny of public markets.

But Musk retaining roughly 40 percent of shares while the company carries a valuation north of 2 trillion dollars does not represent a loss of control. It represents the monetization of control while the underlying decision making power remains concentrated.

SpaceX is officially Space Exploration Technologies Corp, rocket manufacturer, satellite internet service provider, AI firm and owner of X all rolled into one.

What changes is not who decides. What changes is that every decision now moves a publicly traded stock price, watched by millions of retail and institutional shareholders whose pension funds, retirement accounts and portfolios are now directly linked to the outcomes of decisions that were previously made entirely behind closed doors.

The Decision That Already Happened Once, and What It Means at This Scale

In 2022, during the early phase of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Musk made a unilateral decision to restrict Starlink access over Crimea during a planned Ukrainian strike, a decision that was reported to have affected the operation’s outcome. That decision was made by one man, running a private company, based on his own judgment about escalation risk.

That was before the merger with xAI. Before X became part of the same corporate structure. Before the company became a 2 trillion dollar publicly traded entity in which the same individual’s personal wealth, the value of millions of shareholders’ holdings, and decisions about military communications access for active conflicts all now sit inside the same balance sheet.

If a future decision about Starlink access in Ukraine, Taiwan, or any other contested region moves the stock price of SPCX, the incentives surrounding that decision become entangled with the financial interests of a controlling shareholder whose net worth is now directly tied to the market’s reaction.

That is not a hypothetical concern about the distant future. It is a structural feature of the company that began trading on Friday.

What Nobody Asked at the IPO

The IPO valuation was roughly 94 times revenue, compared with Meta at 22 times and Amazon at 18 times. The implied valuation requires 2035 earnings to grow 75 fold from 2025 levels. The xAI segment posted a 6.36 billion dollar operating loss on 3.2 billion dollars in revenue.

The financial press asked whether the valuation can be justified by revenue growth. That is a fair question for a financial outlet to ask.

The question that was not asked in any of yesterday’s coverage is what it means for global security when the infrastructure of modern warfare, the AI systems analyzing it, and the platform broadcasting competing narratives about it, are all controlled by the same person whose personal fortune is now the largest in human history and whose decisions about any one of those systems can move that fortune by tens of billions of dollars in a single trading session.

Musk’s coronation as the first person in history to be worth 1 trillion dollars is likely to add fuel to the debate over wealth inequality and the rise in power of America’s richest tech founders.

The wealth inequality debate is real and important. But it is the familiar debate. It is the debate every outlet wrote yesterday.

The unfamiliar debate, the one that nobody is having yet, is about what happens when the rocket company, the satellite network that runs a war, the AI model, and the social platform where that war is narrated to the world all answer to the same controlling shareholder, and that shareholder’s net worth is now a live, trillion dollar number that moves every time he makes a decision about any of them.

Elon Musk did not just become the richest person who has ever lived on Friday.

He became the first person whose personal fortune is directly, mechanically linked to the outcome of wars he did not start, fought partly with infrastructure he owns, narrated partly on a platform he owns, analyzed partly by an AI he owns.

That is the story nobody wrote yesterday.
