Social Capital Is a High-Risk Asset Class

Stop looking for safety in the forest. Prune your circle into a garden. — A Forrest Pykes

A boy asked his father: “Dad, do we really need friends in life?”

The father smiled. Gentle, but with the fatigue of someone who has seen too much.

“If life were as simple as plain water,” he said, “then no, you wouldn’t.”

“But life isn’t.”

“Life is a tangled mess. A complex maze. A cliff that could collapse at any moment.”

You need someone.

Someone who lets you drop your defenses. Who listens to your grief without judgment. Who gives you courage when you’re afraid. Who pulls you up when you hit rock bottom.

That is the meaning of friendship.

Not drinking buddies. Not likes on social media. But a bond of life and death.

Fake Friends Are More Deadly Than Enemies

The boy asked again: “Are treacherous friends more dangerous than enemies?”

The father nodded.

“Of course.”

Enemies are easy to identify. Their faces scream, “I’m going to get you.” You stay on guard. You know where the knife is coming from. You can dodge. You can block. You can counterattack.

But fake friends are different.

They smile and call you brother. They know all your weaknesses. What you fear. What you love. Where your soft spots are.

Then, at the most unexpected moment, they stab you in the back.

You don’t even have a chance to defend yourself.

That pain is the most fatal.

Enemies just want to defeat you. Fake friends want to destroy you, then step on your corpse to look like good people.

This is the dark side of human nature.

The Forest vs. The Garden

The boy was anxious: “So how do I avoid meeting such bad people?”

The father asked a question:

“Son, between a small garden and a primeval forest, which place has more snakes and scorpions?”

The boy blurted out: “The forest, of course!”

The father placed his hand on the boy’s head.

“Exactly. Keep your circle small.”

“A small garden is enough to bring peace.”

This insight is profound.

The forest is vast. Trees tower high, grass is dense. Where are the snakes hiding? You don’t know. Every step you take is filled with anxiety, fearing what you might step on.

But the garden is small. Everything is in plain sight. What flowers are planted, what grass is grown — it’s clear. If there’s a snake, you see it immediately. And if there is, you have time to deal with it.

Socializing is the same logic.

Knowing a thousand acquaintances is not as good as having three life-and-death friends.

Too many people, and your eyes get blurry. Your mind gets chaotic. Drama increases.

Social Decluttering

Many people fear loneliness. They desperately squeeze into circles. Adding WeChat contacts. Attending dinners. Networking events. Thinking connections equal cash flow. That more friends mean easier paths.

Nonsense.

Those so-called “connections” run faster than anyone else when you’re in trouble. The ones who truly help you are often just one or two.

Moreover, maintaining a large circle is exhausting. You have to guess everyone’s thoughts. Cater to everyone’s emotions. Say things you don’t mean. Drink alcohol you don’t want.

This is severe bandwidth leakage.

In the end, you lose yourself. You become slick. Hypocritical. Exhausted.

Why bother?

Kick those who drain you out of your life. Cut off all those hypocritical relationships.

Keep only those few. Who truly understand you. Who truly love you. Who are truly trustworthy.

That is enough.

How to build your “Small Garden”?

Audit Existing Relationships List the people you contact regularly. Ask yourself: Who makes you feel comfortable? Who makes you tired? Who appeared when you were at your lowest? Who only showed up when you were shining? Cross out those who drain you. Even if they are relatives.

Set Entry Mechanisms Don’t let just anyone into the garden. Have thresholds. Time is the best test. Observe their character. How they treat the weak. How they handle conflicts of interest. Slow down. Don’t pour your heart out too quickly. Let the dust settle.

Deep Linking Be good to those who remain. Be sincere. Spend time. Weather storms together. Share joys. Expose vulnerabilities to each other. Only such relationships can withstand tests. Only they can be your backup.

Dare to Be Alone Don’t fit in just to fit in. When your inner self is strong, you don’t need quantity to fill the void. You only need quality.

Conclusion: Reducing System Entropy

The father’s words were not just about making friends. They were about survival.

In this complex world, the best way to protect yourself is not to become cunning, nor to make countless enemies.

It is to shrink your circle. Purify your environment.

Surround yourself with predictable kindness. With trust that requires no defense.

Only then can you sleep soundly. Dream boldly. Fight with all your might.

Because you know, there is someone behind you. Even if the sky falls, someone will hold it up for you.

This is the power of a small circle.

Less is more. Slow is fast. Narrow is wide.

Life is short. Don’t waste time on irrelevant people. Don’t let the snakes in the forest hurt your heart.

Guard your small garden. Tend your flowers. Protect your people.

Even two or three soulmates are better than thousands of passersby.

Now. Go prune your branches.

Establish your boundaries.
