Here’s the thing — it was just a prank.
One of my roommates had managed to spy on me logging into my Tinder account one time, and then the others colluded to hack my account and change my profile so that it said I was a cuckold.
That should have been the end of it. I mean, not that I usually get a huge number of matches, let alone messages from women I actually find attractive, but there was a long while where I didn’t get anything at all, and it was noticeable. Only when I decided to tweak my profile to see if something else worked did I notice my bio said I was a ‘cuckold looking for a hottie to constantly cheat on me’.
Oh God. I was so embarrassed. And furious.
My roommates thought it was hilarious, but once the anger cooled down a little, my paranoia took hold of me and took me for a ride.
‘What if everyone saw it, and I never get another match?’ I asked.
‘Just change your pictures,’ said Robbie dismissively. ‘Rewrite your bio — no one will remember.’
‘What if somebody from college recognizes me from my profile?’
‘Nobody remembers anybody from Tinder,’ said Matt.
‘What if it goes viral?’
My roommates actually felt a little guilty, recognizing that they might have gone a little too far with their joke. They even started trying to reassure me, saying that hardly anyone from college would have seen my profile anyway, that the chances of anyone seeing it and knowing who I was were tiny. That even if someone happened to be interested in my photo, hardly anyone actually bothered to read people’s bios.
I just sat there for a while gazing at my radioactive profile in horror, feeling my world collapsing around me.
I suppose I should have changed it the moment I realized what they’d done — but it felt like closing the stable door after the horse had bolted, so what was the rush to fix it? Plus, I started believing my roommates that there was no danger of anyone who knew who I was seeing the doctored profile.
But then that assumption was blown right out of the water.
While I was stuck debating whether to transfer to a different college or adopt a drastic new style that would completely change my look, my phone bleeped, and the Tinder app suddenly announced that I had a new match.
Uh… what?
“You and Ella have liked each other,” the app told me.
What. The. Fuck.
At first, I assumed it was someone who wanted to make fun of me for the cuckolding disclosure on my doctored profile. The fact that the image of the girl who had supposedly ‘liked’ me was highly attractive only underlined my suspicion. I was just going to ignore it and get to re-writing my bio — but then I glanced a little closer at the mugshot of “Ella”, and to my surprise, I recognized her.
Oh Jeez.
It was a girl from my English class.
Oh God.
And not just any girl — the hottest girl in my English class, the girl who made me silently wince every time I laid eyes on her, she was so cute.
The realization of who she was triggered a kind of depth charge of burning horror and embarrassment that exploded inside my stomach. Man, what kind of awful luck did I have that someone like her would see my Tinder profile claiming I was a cuckold?
How could I ever show my face in class?
I was pondering whether Ella was the type to start gossiping about me to other people in class and the rest of the college when it suddenly struck me that it was a little coincidental that the hottest girl in my English class had swiped right on me at this moment.
I looked over at my roommates, who were naturally on their phones while we all lounged around the common living space of our suite-style dorm room, watching TV. Had one of them somehow faked a Tinder profile using Ella’s picture to continue messing with me?
I jumped to my conclusion and angrily told them to stop being pricks.
All three of them were surprised at that. I showed them the Tinder match I had with Ella. But when it was clear this was none of them extending the prank, my horror only deepened. Was this really from Ella? Was she and her friends giggling at what a loser this guy from her English class was?
Was I going to be a laughing stock throughout the entire college?
Oh, man.
In fairness to my roommates, they looked as horrified as I did, mortified that their prank might actually have destroyed my entire life at school.
‘Maybe… she’s really interested in you?’ Matt suggested, though even he didn’t sound convinced.
‘Nobody really reads people’s profiles before swiping on them,’ said Marv. ‘She saw your picture, liked you vaguely, swiped on it. Probably nothing to do with what we put on your profile.’
I actually felt a little relieved. Marv always sounded like he knew what he was talking about, but then he was a science major, unlike the rest of us English Lit majors. But what he said seemed logical.
Robbie said, ‘That’s pretty cool, huh? That she likes you?’
I actually felt a little burst of warmth in my chest from the thought of Ella expressing interest in the likes of me. But it seemed way too good to be true. Why would someone like her — one of the most attractive and popular girls in class — show any interest in a dork like me?
‘She probably doesn’t even recognize you from class,’ said Robbie.
Matt said, ‘You should start sitting at the back with the jocks.’ He was laughing. ‘Maybe she’ll forget you usually sit at the front with us geeks, and ask you out.’
‘Ask him out?’ Marv chuckled.
Yeah, it was all a joke.
Robbie said, ‘She probably just swiped on loads of guys, anyway, and she’ll get matches with whoever she swiped on, so chances of her even noticing she swiped right on you are pretty tiny.’
I nodded at that and felt reassured. Calm, even. I could persuade myself that my hacked profile hadn’t gone viral. That after lying low for a few weeks just to be sure, I might be able to forget all about any of this.
But then, just as I picked up my phone, determined to clean up my offending profile, it bleeped with a new message in the Tinder app.
Huh?
‘She messaged me,’ I announced to the room.
There was a stunned silence in reply.
I almost didn’t want to read the message, I was so dreading what it was going to say. My gut feeling was it wasn’t going to be good. I’d figured Robbie was right — she probably swiped right on a load of guys, and chances were if any of them had seen her first, she’d get plenty of matches. So why would she notice me? And why would she bother to send me a message?
She had to be either disgusted at my profile now she’d taken a look at the small print — or else she was amused at the fake cuckold disclosure. I assumed she would want to either denounce me and ask me why I would put something so fucked up on my profile, or else taunt me about it.
But I had to know whether she recognized me from class. Whether I was in danger of public humiliation.
I held my breath and tapped on the ‘chat’ section of the app.
My stomach lurched down into my shoes.
Practically the first thing she said was a question about whether I was in her English class because she thought she recognized me.
‘Oh God… she knows it’s me,’ I groaned. ‘She thinks I’m a cuckold.’
Matt stifled a snigger.
Robbie said, ‘Maybe she likes that about you.’
‘Oh man. What do I do? Deny it’s me? Tell her she’s got me confused for someone else?’
‘Someone else who looks like you also called Danny?’ Matt said.
I groaned again.
Robbie said, ‘You’ll see her in class and she’ll know it was really you. You have no fucking poker face, man.’
Oh Jeez.
Then Marv said, ‘So what she say in the rest of her message?’ His deep voice snapped me out of my traumatized daze.
‘Uh… hang on…’
I read the rest of her message to my flatmates:
Are you really a cuckold? I found out what one is a few months ago, and I can’t believe how hot the concept is. But I never thought I’d run into a guy who was actually into it. I’m actually kinda impressed you put it on your profile. My friends say most guys would be too embarrassed, even though there’s nothing wrong with it when you think about it.
My roommates were all laughing like hyenas now.
I guess I was laughing with them, too, though now I felt like I had to reply to her, saying it was just a joke my roommates had played on me.
She’d probably be embarrassed that she’d apparently fallen for the prank, got roped into my fake profile. That she had just admitted to being interested in the whole cuckolding thing.
Well, I guess it wasn’t as shameful for women to be interested in cuckolding.
But then Robbie said, ‘You know, if you told her you really are a cuckold, she might go on a date with you.’
It wasn’t entirely clear if he was joking, but suddenly the chuckling around me all stopped. We were all pondering Robbie’s point, and it didn’t seem all that outlandish.
‘If I pretend I really am into cuckolding?’
The words sounded shocking coming from my mouth.
Matt laughed like a donkey. ‘Maybe you’d get to fuck her!’
And Marv added, ‘But then you’d have to pretend you wanted her to cheat on you…’
But Robbie was actually serious. Well, he knew Ella from class, too. He said, ‘Wouldn’t it be worth it? Whatever you had to do to get her into bed.’
The laughter died.
We were all looking at each other, as if this were a serious possibility.
‘But I’d have to pretend to be a cuckold,’ I said.
Actually, looking back, I hardly knew what being a cuckold involved. I just knew that people called guys ‘cucks’ sometimes, and it was meant to be disparaging.
Robbie said, ‘You’ve seen her in class. What would you do for the chance to sleep with her? Even just once?’
I thought about her. The long, blonde hair. The jewel-like green eyes. That heavenly smile. The kind of figure that could persuade a monk to give up religion.
Matt said, ‘I’d pretend I was a gay eunuch if I could sleep with her once.’
Marv said with a wry grin, ‘I think the truth would come out when you got her in bed.’
There was a moment where we contemplated Matt managing to get Ella into bed — somehow, as a gay eunuch — only for her to tear off his clothes and discover the truth about his nature.
Then I took a beat and said, ‘I wouldn’t really be able to get her in bed. Even if she did believe I’m a cuckold.’
I glanced around. I could hardly believe it, but it looked as though my roommates were genuinely thinking about how I might get Ella from English Lit class into bed. Insanity.
Robbie said, ‘Look: she said she hardly thought she’d ever run into a guy who was into it. So it’s not like you’ve got competition if she really does want to explore the concept.’
Matt added, ‘And she did say she was impressed at you for putting it on your profile.’
My roommates are insane. Did I say that yet?
I paused a beat and said dryly, ‘But I’d have to pretend to be a cuckold.’
Then Marv said: ‘It can’t be that hard, can it?’
Like we’d all decided it was worth me doing.
I couldn’t believe it.
‘You really think she’d go for it?’ I said. ‘You think she’d date me if I made her think I’m genuinely into cuckolding?’
It was astonishing to me that we were even considering it. But I looked at my roommates’ expressions, and they all seemed to think this might be possible.
Matt said, ‘Worth a shot?’
Robbie shrugged, then nodded.
‘What if she doesn’t believe me?’ I asked.
‘What have you lost? You weren’t going to get to sleep with her anyway.’
I furrowed my brow. ‘What if she’s pretending? If she and her friends are just winding me up?’
Robbie and Matt looked at each other, and then at me, blankly.
Marv actually got up off the couch and stepped over to take the phone out of my hands. I just let him, I didn’t know what was going on.
He peered at the screen — at Ella’s message, and then said, ‘It doesn’t seem like the kind of thing she’d say if she was trying to set a trap for you. She seems kind of… earnest.’
‘Earnest,’ I said.
There was another very pregnant pause.
Then Marv, the sly genius, said calmly, ‘If it turns out she’s winding you up — you just turn the tables and say it was all a prank you were playing on her.’
Oh.
I could hardly believe I was going to try this.
Then Matt said, ‘You need to send her a message back. Soon, otherwise she’ll think you’re not serious.’
Seriously.
Was I going to pretend to be a cuckold to try to bed the hottest girl in my class?
And Robbie said, ‘We’ll help you.’
