Canvas to Glory: Inside WAKO USA’s Ring Sports Training Camp in Huntley, Illinois
The WAKO USA RING SPORTS TRAINING CAMP was quite the experience. Kickboxing is an active sport in both America and worldwide, as a series of athletes of various ages with different teams ascended upon Huntley, Illinois, for a USA Kickboxing-sponsored event like none other in the Land of Lincoln for 3 days, starting at 1 pm on Friday, July 25th, and ending at 12 pm on Sunday, July 27th, 2025, at Z’s Martial Arts Academy.
Each participant was here for different reasons, but one goal remained constant: to become the best they can be and have fun doing it! Some prepared to fight in Abu Dhabi and Guatemala.

Workouts are intense. Each day included routines of sparring, techniques, and, of course, drills to prepare each of them for the ring!
Combat sports in America have had a rich history, from full-contact tournaments popular in the 60s and 70s to the rise of MMA. Kickboxing sits in the middle between the two.

The training camp introduced sports psychology, which was an interesting addition to training, as martial arts and combat sports incorporate the mind, body, and will of the individual. Most of the time, it is finding and cultivating a fighting spirit and overcoming adversity.
Something invaluable to the kickboxer. And training camps like these are important because “you get a taste of other people’s style of training,” as one athlete said, which facilitates growth. Growth is gold to any martial artist or athlete.

But it starts with finding one’s “purpose.” “Because purpose is the foundation,” said WAKO Canada President Muzammal Nawaz. The pathway model was introduced and explained on day 2.
It works in other parts of the world, and now it’s time for it to set the tone of combat sports in North America.
The training camp is meant to bring the best out of the athletes.
“The type of knowledge they get is not something they get from their coaches or gyms,” as these training camps combine training that focuses on higher levels, attributes the atmosphere, and continuing that exposes the athlete to 360 training. Without it, many athletes wouldn’t get these kinds of opportunities. They didn’t exist. As explained to me by WAKO USA Head Official Coach Tim Zurk Mazurkiewicz.
It was clear from the start that these camps provide a place to sharpen and inspire. Every athlete was engaged and ready to learn, no matter their fight experience.
Fight camps should never be taken for granted because the chance to gain wisdom, improve themselves, teamwork experience, and make necessary changes to win, lay at the heart of these camps. It was certainly at the heart of this one.
The event was one that hits the brain and vibrates to the heart and comes out the fists and feet.
Never underestimate the power of camaraderie that enhances and engages a fighter because we are social creatures.
It’s one thing to think you are a fighter and totally another to BE a fighter. This was made clear at this training camp. In the digital age, distractions are everywhere, so it makes sense to clean out the noise and focus on what is important, especially if you are a fighter.

For many, this journey is a family affair. When the athlete is a minor, for example, that means the parents are heavily involved in a supportive and awesome way. “There, as a parent, you have to understand your role is you have to show up for them,” the parent bridges the gap, as one parent explained.
Their success is tied to the involvement of the parent. The parent provides the opportunity to grow, and they make the difference for their child as an athlete, because the coach teaches, and the parent helps implement. It’s often not enough to just go to a gym; you have to bring it home and live and practice it.
It’s always a good idea, if possible, for the parent to experience the sport with them, as this can help motivate the kid and help the parent understand combat sports as a passion of their child, as was made clear to me by the passionate parent.

That’s something that training camps such as this help provide: family time that complements and completes the training.
The same can be done if you are a spouse or sibling, because at the end of the day it’s about the athlete’s success and building lasting bonds, and family is the core of any athlete.
The training camp is a great positive, reinforcing environment. A lot of effort went into planning this training camp, including “what kind of skills and needs athletes have,” therefore, they are often region-specific. This is what WAKO USA Head Coach David Bybee emphasized.
The one thing I learned from this training camp, just as an outside observer, no matter what, belief in yourself is paramount, and have fun! That’s the heart of being a successful kickboxer!
